Are you looking forward to Friday too? The weekend is coming soon, but have you already figured out how you will spend it? If not, then we have an interesting offer for you.
Karina Thousand Lakes is an ideal place for yachtsmen and fans of water scooters. Due to the lack of expressways and an airport for passenger traffic, as well as poor railway infrastructure, access to Mazury from many regions of Poland can be problematic. But let’s try to turn these inconveniences into cars. Narrow and winding roads are ideal not only for motorcyclists, but also for motorists who like to “drive slowly”. At the end of May, before the holidays, we made a motorcycle trip to Mazury over the weekend.
Weekend for two
Our destination was Mikołajki, the capital of the Land of a Thousand Lakes, or rather a hotel located on Talty Lake in the Old Gardens. We started our trip on Saturday at 9.30 am in Warsaw. With backpacks, we headed towards Mazury along the road leading through Pultusk, Ostroleka and Rozogi. With almost a whole day ahead of us before reaching the place, we decided to explore. The first short coffee stop took place at Zegrzyńskie Lake. Less than 30 km further is Pultusk, where the longest market square in Europe is located. Moving further north, in Ostrołęka, you can quickly grab a hamburger and fries at a popular fast food chain. However, we did not stop there, but continued our journey towards Masuria.
Worth turning off the main road
During a short stop at a forest camp, we made a spontaneous decision not to go directly to the hotel in the Old Gardens, but on the way to Rucane Nida for lunch. The choice of this place was dictated not only by the picturesque location of the restaurant, but also by the desire to get to know the local roads, which are not always paved. We stumbled upon gravel on the Karvica-Ruciane Nida section. None of the bikes we rode (Kawasaki ER-6N, Suzuki V-Strom 650 SE) were equipped with off-road tires, which made it difficult to ride in the sand, but there wasn’t enough dirt to make the gravel section suitable for these bikes. big challenge. However, Suzuki, belonging to the Adventure class, turned out to be much more comfortable in such conditions.
Delicious but too expensive
After a delicious (perch and pike fillet with French fries and salad), but also an expensive lunch (PLN 140), we set off along the route leading through Ukta (over the bridge over the Krutynia River) to Mikołajki. A short walk around the port located on Lake Mikołajski, a visit to a grocery store, a few photos for memory and after a 10-minute motorbike ride around 16.30 we arrived at the hotel in Stary Sady. There we booked a stay with a massage package (this is how we celebrated our wedding anniversary). The cost per night in a 4-star hotel with a swimming pool and SPA with meals (dinner and buffet breakfast) was PLN 1250 for two.
picturesque views
The next day, after having breakfast and lounging in the sun on the sun loungers by Lake Talty, we went further to admire the Masurian landscapes. From the Old Gardens we went to Mrągowo. There we decided to visit the Museum of Military Equipment, but it was closed. It is best to contact the owner by phone before coming over the weekend as “theoretically” it is closed on weekends. Theoretically, because, for example, on the long weekend in June, the owner announced that the museum would be open. Tickets for two adults cost PLN 50.
Forests, lakes and winding roads
While in Mrągowo, we visited the amphitheater located on Lake Chos. In its surroundings you can take a walk and have a tasty (and cheaper) lunch. The cost of a two-course dinner for two with coffee was PLN 100. Back in Mrągowo, we refueled the motorcycles and an hour later. At 13.00 we start our way back to Warsaw, making short breaks along the way. This time the route ran through Pechki and Shchitno. This picturesque section of the road, full of forests, winding roads and views of the lakes, was our favorite during a two-day motorcycle ride.
Low transport costs
Following the regulations, we arrived in Warsaw shortly before noon. 17. The trip was pleasant not only because of the views, but also because of the sunny weather and the air temperature hovering around plus 20 degrees Celsius. Motorcycles did not disappoint and turned out to be a fairly economical means of transportation. On a track with a total length of 500 km, each of them consumed about 4.5 l / 100 km. The cost of a motorcycle trip to Masuria in both directions was PLN 150 per person.
An adventure for those who like to break away from the asphalt
The younger and more modern Suzuki V-Strom 650 SE turned out to be ideal for such antics. Thanks to the standard ABS system, there was no risk of wheel spin when braking on a gravel road. Even when starting on slippery surfaces, traction was provided by the TC system. The increased suspension travel and high ground clearance ensured that the engine would not fail off-road. In turn, on the route to Suzuki, they praised a comfortable upright seating position, a clear set of hours with an accurate on-board computer, and the presence of a 12-volt outlet for powering a phone or navigation. When driving with one person weighing 85 kg, the 71 hp engine. provided good dynamics.
