Stefan Horngacher has announced the German ski jumping squad for the 2023/24 season. The former Polish coach decided to reshuffle the A-team and left only four players from the last campaign. The two had to get along.
The German national team cannot consider the previous ski jumping season a success. Only one of its representatives, Andreas Wellinger, took a place in the final ten of the World Cup, the rest performed a little worse. Bad results brought clouds to Stefan Horngacher and many sentenced him to be fired from his coaching position. In the end, the 53-year-old remained the coach of the German ski jumpers and took drastic steps to improve the situation before the start of the next season.
Stefan Horngacher has announced the squad for the 2023/24 season.
In the general classification for the 2022/23 season, Andreas Wellinger finished seventh. The other highest-ranked German aviator was Karl Geiger, who finished 11th.
Four positions below was Markus Eisenbichler, who until the start of the season was considered the leader of the German national team. The fourth best was Konstantin Schmid. And the four have been given a spot in the frame of the upcoming ski jumping campaign.
Two German jumpers promoted to Team B
What might be surprising is the decision to send two famous German jumpers, Stefan Leyhe and Pius Paschke, to the B team. The first of them finished 28th overall last season, and the highest was 12th in Willingen. He has won only one World Cup competition in his entire career, and his biggest success was the second place in the Olympic Games as part of a team from Pyeongchang. He also won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.
In turn, Pius Paschke has always been a strong backbone of the German national team, although he never climbed to the top step of the World Cup podium. Moreover, last season he withdrew from the 4-Hills-Tournament. He was most often predicted to be relegated to the B team, which was led by former Swiss team coach Ronnie Hornshoe.
