Renewable energy is the only way to save the planet, and yet our current methods of generating electricity from renewable sources are far from perfect. However, a new study by scientists points to a method that has helped them achieve previously unattainable levels of solar energy production.

Perovskite Solar Panels Key to Renewable Energy

Solar panels seem to be an excellent source of electricity, using the energy of our star. However, they have a rather big drawback. Silicon-based panels achieve a peak efficiency of just 29 percent.

This number has been an insurmountable barrier for many years, significantly limiting the effectiveness of solutions of this type. To achieve a high level of energy, it is necessary to invest in a large number of panels occupying vast tracts of land.

The answer to this problem is perovskite, which renewable energy solution engineers call the “wonder material.” The mineral has been known for a long time, because it was discovered in 1839 in the Ural Mountains. Experts previously suggested that it would be great for solar panels. Now scientists are testing its capabilities for the first time.

Scientists bring the efficiency of solar panels beyond the historical limit

The efficiency of the perovskite solar cell (PSC) was recently investigated by two independent research groups from Japan and China. The conclusions of both groups are very similar and quite optimistic - with the help of perovskite cells, engineers can finally exceed the level of 29 percent. The efficiency of traditional panels.

The researchers solved the current problem in a very interesting way. Perovskite can harvest energy from the sun more efficiently, but the cells made from it are too unstable to be used outside the lab.

In both studies, a silicone panel was coated with a layer of “miracle material” to create a new hybrid cell. Perovskite has improved the efficiency of power generation, while traditional panels have provided sufficient stability. As a result, a record efficiency of about 35% was achieved. Scientists are already saying that “much higher” levels of efficiency could be developed over time.

It is worth recalling that the record is at the level of 33.7 percent. dropped just this year. In 2009, the standard efficiency was a symbolic 4 percent.

Scientists from Japan and China say the new methods could lead to the development of cheaper, better panels that will open up global energy transformation. A Chinese startup is already working on a hybrid cell that will cost “one-twentieth the current price of cells,” says Tang Hairen of Nanjing University.
