Keri RussellThe new Netflix series has all the melancholy humor and fast-paced dialogue of many of the amazing political dramas that came before it. Unfortunately, its first season is only eight episodes long, and for those who love to binge watch a new show that has quickly become their favorite, that means it’s over too soon.
For everyone who’s done Diplomatand hungry for similar shows while waiting for season 2, these 10 shows, whether they’re similar themes or writing style, are perfect for that particular itch.
10 ‘Scandal’ (2012-2018)
If perception is everything, especially in politics, then the characters in Diplomat I should have called Olivia PopeKerry Washington) at some point in their first season. In her own show, Olivia runs a Washington, D.C.-based crisis management firm that helps rich, famous, and powerful people hide their dirty laundry.
In between resolving her failed marriage and trying to avoid a potential third world war, DiplomatKate Wyler is trying to maintain a somewhat perfect public image in order to secure her position as ambassador, despite those plotting to remove her from office for their own gain.
9 “West Wing” (1999–2006)
Although the tone of this gem of Aaron Sorkin is significantly more uplifting than the tone Diplomat with past White House staff serving diligently and faithfully under a truly competent and inspiring President, Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen), there are still some parallels between them.
Both shows depict ordinary people at work where the stakes are always high and the decisions they are forced to make can mean the difference between order and chaos for their own nation and sometimes the world.
8 “Night Agent” (2023-)
How Diplomat, this show begins with a very important phone call that changes the course of the protagonist’s life. FBI Agent Peter SutherlandGabriel Basso) is determined to live out the legacy of his alleged traitor father, which seems possible after he miraculously stops a subway explosion, but quickly learns that it was just the tip of the iceberg of a much larger conspiracy.
Both Peter and Kate WylerKeri Russell) do their best to swim in rather treacherous waters, more focused on saving lives and preventing disasters than accumulating popularity and power.
7 “Recruit” (2022-)
Starting a new job, especially in government where everyone is determined to rise through the ranks and save themselves at the expense of everyone and everything else, can make anyone feel out of place.
This is how it is in Rookie in the center of the plot is aspiring CIA lawyer Owen Hendrix (Noah Centineo), who was assigned to look into possible national security threats in the mail, and stumbled upon a trustworthy one. Very similar to Russell’s character in DiplomatOwen is surrounded by people who try to play him like a violin and use him to achieve their goals.
6 “Game of Thrones” (2011-2019)
With all the dragons and zombies and prophecies, it would be easy to forget about it. Game of Thrones perhaps it was predominantly a political drama, focusing more on the conflict between warring houses vying for power than anything else.
Unlike, not like Diplomat, this series seemed to portray all the types of political players that existed as events unfolded; from the completely immoral Tywin (Charles Dance), a young acolyte on the rise, Sansa (Sophie Turner), manipulative traitor, Littlefinger (Aiden Gillen), a relatively morally sound operator Tyrion (Peter Dinklage).
5 ‘Vice President’ (2012-2019)
Crisis management is the name of the game for the fictional and short-tempered Vice President (or “VP”) Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and its lean and accident-prone staff.
In this HBO comedy series, the crises mentioned range from being a spy held hostage in a foreign country to having to forge the vice president’s name on a greeting card. The series is part workplace comedy, part political drama and feels uncomfortable and realistic at times, something it has in common with Diplomat.
4 “News” (2012-2014)
In a world full of disinformation and political polarization, newsrooma series about journalists and journalists fighting an uphill battle to be passionately interesting and completely accurate may seem like a breath of fresh air to some.
Very similar to Diplomatsubjects of public attention and perception take center stage as the staff of both shows attempt to navigate a minefield of powerful figures calling each other out and causing public outcry and panic in the process.
3 ‘Americans’ (2013-2018)
It might seem like it’s a little on the nose to put another well received Keri Russell on this list, but this gripping tale of Russian spies living undercover in the United States is the perfect way to satisfy any Keri Russell could be corrected after Diplomat.
This time, Russell is on the wrong side of the law, working to undermine the American government as an undercover agent, not a government official trying to act as an agent of order.
2 ‘Bodyguard’ (2018-)
In this series, the main roles Richard Madden like David Budd, a PTSD cop tasked with protecting a controversial politician, has quite a lot in common with many of his predecessors on this list: he starts with a public tragedy that is somehow connected to the protagonist, grudges with current government action is felt throughout, and there is a great detective aspect to the plot.
Diplomat shares all these facets with him, which makes it another great show to watch while waiting for season 2.
1 ‘The Tudors’ (2007-2010)
There have been very few series that have managed to cover both the professional and personal lives of the most influential political figures in history as well as Tudorswhich focused on the reign and six infamous marriages of King Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) England.
This is something in common with Diplomatwhich also explores how difficult it is to maintain a functional and stable marriage in the midst of trying to deal effectively with political issues.
