American author Stephen King entertained readers and audiences for many years during his long and prolific career as a brilliant and flamboyant storyteller. Referred to as the “King of Horror,” King has become responsible for some of the most iconic horror and fantasy stories in pop culture, and many of his works have even been adapted for film and television.
With so many of his stories being shown on the big and small screen, King’s cleverly written and memorable antagonists have graced the spotlight. Since then, these dastardly foes have become some of cinema’s most iconic and terrifying villains. Here are ten of the best villains from adapted King stories who have dominated the screen with their intimate and intimidating personalities.
10 Margret White - “Carrie” (1976)
Margaret White (English)Piper Laurie) was an obsessive and overbearing religious fanatic who harbored a unique hypocrisy and hatred for those she considered sinners. Her bigotry and anger eventually led to her abusive relationship with her troubled telekinetic teenage daughter, Carrie (Sissy Spacek.)
As a God-fearing woman, Margaret strove to maintain a strictly religious environment within her home. She began to condemn everyone around for not sticking to their old fashionable views of the world. Her poor upbringing towards her daughter eventually led to her death after Carrie was forced to kill her mother in self-defense after Margaret attacked Carrie, claiming that her telekinesis was the result of witchcraft.
9 Kurt Barlow - Salem’s Lot (1979)
Centuries-old Vampire Kurt BarlowReggie Nalder), was a force of pure evil that terrorized the small town of Salem Lot, Maine, determined to turn the town’s inhabitants into members of its undead army. Once Barlow’s death toll began to pile up, it was up to writer Ben Mears.David Soul) and horror fan Mark Petrie (Lance Kerwin) to end the bloody rampage of the vampire.
With haunting yellow eyes, long fangs and a sickly haggard look, this terrifying bloodsucker was undoubtedly one of King’s scariest characters, as he dominated his short screen time with his frightening and supernatural presence. Eventually, Ben Mears stabbed him through the heart and he died, slowly turning to dust.
8 Christina - ‘Christina’ (1983)
This supernatural 1958 Plymouth Fury had a mind of her own and a will to kill those who harmed her or her owner, Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon.) Christina displayed genuine feelings of anger and jealousy, and showed relentless persecution of those she despised.
With the ability to withstand multiple blows and even regenerate mechanical parts, Christina has become one of King’s most formidable adversaries. Although she was eventually destroyed by Arnie’s friend Dennis (John Stockwell), Christina was still a cunning horror movie villain who stubbornly refused to give up without a fight.
7 Cujo - Cujo (1983)
This bloodthirsty and iconic dog was definitely not man’s best friend. After being bitten by a rabies-infected bat, this harmless St. Bernard began to terrorize his community and attack everyone he met. He ended up stalking and attacking a poor mother and her son after their car broke down on his owner’s property.
As a fearsome and nightmarish foe, Kujo effectively frightened the public due to being himself the antithesis of the sweet and cuddly furry companions that dogs have become known for. With foam around his mouth and blood on his fur, he launched a reign of terror before he met his demise, before he could do any more harm.
6 Randall Flagg - “Confrontation” (1994)
Perhaps one of King’s most important antagonists from the novels, Randall Flagg (Jamie Sheridan), was an immortal and evil sorcerer who wanted to use his dark powers to destroy civilization. During the events of Rack In the miniseries, he used his power of influence to lead an evil cult of survivors after most of humanity was wiped out by a devastating apocalypse.
Often referred to as “The Dark Man”, Flagg became King’s most recurring villain, appearing in several stories with different names and different portrayals. However, he always pursued the same goals of spreading evil and wickedness. Matthew McConaughey even played him in a less than stellar Dark tower movie. However, in the miniseries, this incarnation of Flagg was eventually defeated by the power of God before he could rule the world.
5 Warden Samuel Norton - The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Warden NortonBob Gunton) emerged as the stern administrator of the Shawshank Correctional Institution who ruled with discipline and the belief that every person can find redemption through the Lord. However, he harbored a corrupt and greedy dark side at heart, as he used his position and forced labor to get rich.
Norton was a criminal responsible for punishing criminals and did everything in his power to keep his affairs secret. With the help of his equally vicious second-in-command, Captain Hadley (Clancy Brown), the two were ready to intimidate, imprison and even kill anyone who could pose a potential threat to their plans. Eventually, however, Norton’s true crimes were exposed to the press and he faced punishment after being outmaneuvered by smart fugitive convict Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins.)
4 Mrs. Carmody - “Fog” (2007)
When horrific and strange-looking monsters from another dimension descended on a small town in Maine, a group of townspeople hoped to escape the ordeal by hiding in a supermarket. Unfortunately, some survivors soon realized that the biggest threat to their survival was Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), a cult religious fanatic who used her fear of the situation to take control and sacrifice anyone she deemed blasphemous.
Looks a lot like Margret White from Carrie, Mrs. Carmody, was an extremely judgmental and paranoid woman. She believed that the monsters near the supermarket were sent by God as punishment for the sins of mankind, and convinced herself that she could be the only one who could save people from this punishment. As her power and influence grew, so did her ego, until she was killed before she could sacrifice an innocent child.
3 Annie Wilks - Misery (1990)
Annie WilksKathy Bates) was a troubled, homicidal ex-nurse who was obsessed with famed writer Paul Sheldon (James Caan.) Luckily finding Sheldon injured and alone after a car accident, Annie nursed the bedridden writer at her home, but Sheldon soon realized that Annie had no intention of letting him go.
Kathy Bates’ Oscar-winning performance as Annie left a sense of suspense and suspense every time she appeared on screen, as she was the perfect example of celebrity fan obsession that went too far. Her torture and Sheldon’s imprisonment remain one of the most disturbing moments in King’s stories.
2 Jack Torrance - The Shining (1980)
Jack Torrance (English)Jack Nicholson) was a struggling writer who brought his family to a secluded mountain hotel to become its caretaker and find some quiet time to write his novel. However, over time, he experienced a psychological breakdown due to salon fever and coercion by evil spirits, leading him to desire to kill his wife and son.
Jack was not the best family man before arriving at the hotel, as he had a history of domestic abuse, and his pent-up anger and former alcoholism were the driving force that led him on his murderous path. In the end, he failed to kill his family, as they managed to escape the hotel, leaving him to freeze to death in the freezing cold.
1 Pennywise - “It” (1990, 2017)
Pennywise the Dancing Clown was an otherworldly shape-shifting monster who basically disguised himself as a circus clown to unbalance and frighten his victims by feeding on their fear.
Performed by the legendary Tim Curry in a 1990 mini-series and then again as a Swedish actor Bill Skarsgard in the 2017 film adaptation, Pennywise became an icon of the horror genre. This character has inspired fear among fans of King’s works for many years and has contributed to many people’s fear of clowns. Overall, his memorability and vicious personality make Pennywise one of Stephen King’s greatest villains.
