Made Dick Wolf, Law and order - one of the longest-running television shows and one of the most famous police procedures, is now on its 22nd season, and the 23rd is on its way. It first aired from 1990 to 2010 and won several Primetime Emmy Awards before returning in 2021 and can be found in syndication just about everywhere. The series also spawned many spin-offs and a reputation for episodes “ripped from the headlines”, inspired by real events and crossovers between each show.
Show title card and iconic du-dun the sound effects, designed to mimic the sound of a cell door closing, are instantly recognizable and the show is an undeniable piece of TV history. With hundreds of episodes telling the stories of countless perpetrators and their victims, and all the twists and turns of the investigation, there’s no shortage of compelling must-watch episodes from the show’s early days to the present day.
10 “Shadow” (season 8, episode 8)
The murder of a surety in The Shadow leads to the discovery of a corrupt lawyer who can solve cases for a high price. The detectives set out to determine who he is working with and learn that there is a connection to the DA’s office.
Like some of Law and orderThe other most notable episode of Shadows goes deeper than just crime and deals with broader corruption and betrayal. The episode also features a young Kate Mara as one of the guest stars.
9 “Hideout” Parts 1 & 2 (Season 9, Episodes 23 & 24)
In “Hideout”, the two-part Season 9 finale, the detectives deal with the Russian mafia, after a shootout, they discover a mob murder and a traumatized boy who saw it happen but is too afraid to speak, and then, eventually Finally, a money laundering scheme. On top of that, the precinct receives a bomb alert.
The two-part format is a more complex, higher-stakes case than usual with civil rights violations where detectives need to detain witnesses so they can even continue their investigation safely, and the case goes all the way to the Supreme Court.
8 “Bodies” (season 14, episode 1)
In “Bodies,” the season 14 premiere, the detectives don’t face their usual murder and suspect - this time they’re dealing with a serial killer stalking teenage girls at night who need a cab to get home. The killer’s lawyer knows where the bodies are buried, and in search of answers, Jack McCoy, played by Sam Waterstonis prosecuting a lawyer for aiding and abetting a criminal.
“Bodies” does not simply represent a case somewhat different from Law and order norm, it presents an interesting use of legal tactics in the pursuit of justice, as well as a look at how far a lawyer can go in his career.
7 “Burn the Map” (season 18, episode 14)
In “Burn the Map” based on Detective Green, played by Jesse L. Martin, shoots a murder suspect, this leads to an investigation that reveals information about his past gambling problems, including the fact that he owed money to the suspect. As a result, Green decides to leave the service.
Throughout your run, Law and order went from focusing almost exclusively on business to diving into the personal lives of the characters, and Burn Card is one of the best examples of that. It was a fitting send-off for Martin, who ran the show from seasons 10 to 18 for a total of 198 episodes.
6 “Invaders” (season 16, episode 22)
When the detectives investigate fake DEA badges in “Invaders”, it leads to the murder of ADA Borgia, and in order to draw them out, McCoy holds a fake hearing and enlists the support of a corrupt DEA agent. As the case progresses, McCoy becomes more and more personally involved.
Law and orderRussian detectives sometimes take a lot of risks, and “Invaders” is no exception. It’s an interesting take on McCoy as a character, especially how far he’s willing to go and whether it’s worth it in the end.
5 “Rubber Room” (season 20, episode 23)
As the final episode Law and orderThe original Rubber Room is a gripping story about a blogger who threatens to attack a school. The title refers to a temporary reassignment center for teachers accused of misconduct, and the blogger is revealed to be one of the accused teachers.
“Rubber Room” was a great note to end, albeit temporarily, and as you might expect, Law and order fashion, explored the all-too-familiar topic of threats to schools. The episode also features an Olympic skier. Lindsey Vonn in a cameo role as a secretary.
4 “Couples” (season 13, episode 23)
It’s a very busy day for the detectives at The Couples. Law and order300th series. They have to deal with several murders and kidnappings, and then they learn that one of the murders is connected to another committed a decade earlier. Each case involves a domestic dispute.
“Couples” was a fun and memorable way to show the show’s long-term perspective, and the idea that all cases had a common theme made them all the more interesting. The episode also features some light-hearted humorous moments, and as is often the case with Law and ordergreat performances by guest stars.
3 “Damaged” (season 8, episode 22)
In season 8 “Damaged”, after a teacher is shot, an investigation reveals that she was not the intended target, but instead the shooter sought revenge on the three boys who raped her mentally handicapped sister.
“Damaged” includes many twists and turns throughout the case, from the motive behind the shooting to the outcome of the case against the boys. Familiar scenes from the series of testimony and courtroom interrogations are particularly tense and uncomfortable in “Damaged,” which culminates in the shocking outcome that despite the jury finding the boys guilty, a last-minute motion at the urging of the judge results in the case being dismissed. .
2 “Pro Se” (season 6, episode 21)
In “Pro Se” in season 6, three people are found murdered in a vintage clothing store and a fourth is wounded, eventually leading the detectives to a schizophrenic who has been off medication for an extended period of time, causing him to break away from reality. He has a law degree and insists on defending himself.

1 “Aftershock” (season 6, episode 23)

Law and order Usually viewers go through a crime investigation and subsequent legal battle, but Aftershock is a rare departure from the formula. The episode offers a glimpse into not only what happens after, but how the characters deal with it, from not being bothered to how the experience changes them forever.
