Nightmare folk horror Ari Aster returns to the Alamo Drafthouse as the theater partners with A24 to show a director’s cut of his 2019 masterpiece. midsommar. With the director’s third feature film Bo is afraid at the end of April, the show will not only revisit the award-winning Scandinavian film as Astaire planned, but will also invite fans to join him for a live conversation in downtown Brooklyn about the film on April 1st. Viewers at any screening of the film will also be able to get an exclusive preview of Bo is afraid and will be able to watch along with Aster’s Q&A stream, which airs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Washington DC, and Chicago.
midsommar is a continuation of his Astaire Toni Collettehit of 2018 Hereditaryand another strong female role is needed in Florence Pugh on a “work trip” through hell. After losing her sister to suicide, Dani takes the slacker out to Sweden with her friends for a seemingly delightful midsummer festival. What begins as a beautiful escape from the horrors of her life turns into madness at the hands of a pagan cult called the Horga. Pugh’s powerful acting and Astaire’s careful hand behind the camera helped Astaire become one of the top horror directors and is considered one of A24’s best horror films to date.
Like its two previous functions, Bo is afraid seems to be another complex beast. It combines comedy and surreal horror. Joaquin Phoenix as an anxious man exploring his deepest fears on a wild journey from his home after the death of his mother. The trailer wasn’t particularly helpful for plot detail either, relying on the bizarre and horrifying nature of his stay, which teeters between Astaire’s deeply disturbing previous work and an indie travel flick. Perhaps a brief overview, kindly provided by Alamo, will give some idea of what the director is presenting to the audience this time around.
In addition to the rejuvenating Phoenix, Bo is afraid has a star group with Parker Posey, Nathan Lane, Richard Kind, Amy Ryan, Patty LuPoneAnd Zoe Lister-Jones. Kylie Rogerswho also appears in the film, highlighted the strangeness of Asta’s last role and the nervousness she felt performing alongside Phoenix.
