Just over three months ago, Netflix released Rookieaction thriller featuring Noah Centineo as a young CIA operative who falls into a trap when he is unwittingly dragged into an international conspiracy. Become a streamer this week Night agentaction thriller featuring Gabriel Basso as a young FBI operative who falls into a trap when he is unwittingly dragged into an international conspiracy. There is definitely a pattern here.

It’s hard not to compare the two shows - not only are both Netflix originals, but the plots of both are very similar. Just replace one US intelligence and security service with another. You can’t blame any of the series or claim that Night agent is plagiarism Rookie, since they were both probably filmed at the same time. Prime Video has spy-themed films such as Jack Ryan, ReacherAnd List of terminals they’ve all played out in large numbers, so why can’t Netflix join in on the fun and create their own list?

Night agentbased on the novel of the same name Matthew Quirk, is about Peter Sutherland (Basso), a young FBI agent who works in the basement of the White House during the night shift, where his main job is answering an emergency phone that rarely rings. A few months prior to the start of the series, Peter survived a subway terrorist attack in which several conspirators believed he was involved. Just as Peter’s once-promising career seems to be turning into a tedious, uneventful job, he gets an urgent call from CTO Rose Larkin (Luchan Buchanan), which testifies to the murder of her aunt and uncle. Peter is soon tasked with protecting Rose and begins to uncover the truth that ties the bombing and murders together, indicating that there is a mole in the White House. Unfortunately for him, he is also a suspect.

could be quickly considered Night agent to be another conspiracy thriller series full of the same clichés and gimmicks you’d expect. It’s true that it’s not the most original show of the year, but at the same time, that doesn’t stop it from being incredibly attractive. 10 episodes, each 45 to 50 minutes long. Night agent thrilling, gripping and successfully able to balance a storyline that could easily become overly complex. We’ve seen shows like this that start out promising but then fall prey to an overly complex plot where, even if you blink, you might miss a key plot detail. It’s not what Night agent is. The storyline is concise and easy to understand, never sinking into simplicity. While there are certainly moments that aren’t the most realistic, it never pisses you off or makes you stop caring.

Known for creating and co-writing series such as Shield, TimesWithAnd Special Forces, Sean Ryan is an expert in creating exciting programs, and Night agent is no different. In fact, the show’s fast pace almost makes it feel more like a movie, and that’s one of the main reasons why the show works as well as it does. The cliffhangers at the end of each episode almost require you to stay put and watch the next episode. There’s rarely a dull moment, and it has the right balance of action, political intrigue, and family drama - all while never losing focus on the overall story, leading to a more than satisfying first season.

In the midst of all the chaos Night agent also has a strong heart; over the course of the season, we not only learn about Peter’s relationship with his late father and his reasons for joining the FBI, but we also connect with Rose and understand her story. Basso and Buchanan did an excellent job as Peter and Rose, elevating their characters beyond the archetypes one would expect from a series like this. They have a natural chemistry with each other, and while their relationship does take some unexpected directions, it’s their delivery that allows you to go along with it. Hong Chauwho seems to be finally getting her due thanks to her recently acclaimed roles in WHALE, MenuAnd Poker Face, continues her winning streak as Diane Farr, US Chief of Staff. Chow is clearly the most prominent; her character is one of the most complex of the ensemble, often existing in a gray area and either at odds with our heroes or trying to help them. Chau demonstrates a clear understanding of her character, proving once again that she is one of the most versatile actresses working today. There are aspects of Diana that are a little underwritten, but fortunately Chau’s performance overshadows her character’s shortcomings.

At times, the show borders on becoming overly melodramatic in its writing. The plot, while exciting, is as predictable as you’d expect with few surprises. Some of the twists are also not as shocking or surprising as the script clearly suggests. This is not to say that the performance is boring, but it does have a very familiar feel to it. In the pantheon of action-packed thrillers on streaming, Night agent definitely one of the most memorable. Those who fell in love Rookie will feel at home with the new series, and those who need another action title are waiting for the return Reacher will also be more than satisfied. It doesn’t open up any new possibilities in terms of its genre, but it manages to take what works in previous shows and work with it - it’s really all you can ask for. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
