First, the coronavirus pandemic and quarantine, and now remote work, have changed our habits. High inflation and high prices also played a role. We are less likely to be in the city center, avoid cafes and restaurants. More and more people will trade coffee meeting in a cafe for a quick coffee from an espresso machine while refueling at a gas station.
- This is the end of the cafe as we know it. This is a sustainable trend that I follow. Fewer and fewer people come for coffee. We avoid cafes. The high cost makes us walk with bags. Working from home also helped. Homemade coffee is much cheaper, which means a significant loss of customers. - says Mr. Adam, owner of a local café in Warsaw’s Mokotow district.
Remote work has changed our habits. The cafe has fewer customers
The owners of other cafes speak in the same tone. - Empty, empty all around. Maybe something will change this afternoon. Even regular customers visit us less and less. Some come once a week, others once a month. And it’s all thanks to remote work. they say.
- So far, they have left the company in groups to discuss all business matters over a cup of coffee. There was not a single empty seat. Now the situation has changed. Several employees remained in nearby office buildings. No one will drive twenty kilometers to drink coffee with a colleague from work. they add in unison.
Expensiveness effectively deters us from shopping. Many people refuse expensive coffee
In addition to remote work, there is another important issue. It is expensive, which quickly and effectively changes our current habits. The Global State of the Consumer Tracker report, developed by consulting firm Deloitte, shows that almost half of Poles intend to cut their spending due to high inflation. And prices change from month to month.
According to experts, two-thirds of buyers look at every złoty twice before spending it. First we pay in installments on loans, then we pay rent, and the rest we spend on daily expenses. In order to save several hundred PLN on fuel, we choose remote work. Increasingly, we refuse such pleasures as going to the cinema, a restaurant or a cafe.
- Inflation eats away at our savings. In fact, we earn much less than before. For ten months we have been fighting a decline in purchases in Poland. says economist Marek Zuber in an interview with Wprost.pl.
Loot distribution changes. Instead of going to the cafe, customers go to the store for coffee.
Adam Ringier, owner of Green Caffe Nero, has a slightly different perspective on the distribution of coffee production. In his opinion, another wave of changes in the market is coming. “After the pandemic, which many bars and restaurants could not stand, shopping habits have changed for a long time” the entrepreneur said in an interview with horecatrends.pl.
Adam Ringier claims that the restaurant’s patrons moved into the café. “It’s a cheaper option and it can still be elegant” he noted. On the other hand, black coffee drinkers have turned cafes into gas stations or local shops with coffee corners.
A similar opinion is shared by Viktor Velgopolan, sales manager at Primulator. “More and more stores, in order to attract the attention of customers, want to offer coffee, preferably the same as in a coffee shop. At the moment, a completely new sector for our industry is the food sector.” he added on this site.
In the Warsaw districts of Ochota or Mokotow, coffee makers can be found in most local shops. Separate tables can be found even in the bakeries in the neighborhood. Every day when we go shopping, the shop assistants encourage us to buy coffee. The choice is wide and the price offer is affordable for any budget. Many clients are coaxed into drinking some strong black before starting work from home.
