Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shared two new images of his Black Adam and the Justice Society of America on the cover of Total Film magazine. In the first image, Johnson is shown on the title avatar next to Aldis Hodge like a hawk man Noah Centineo like Atom Crusher Quintessa Swindell like a cyclone and Pierce Brosnan like Doctor Fate. The image also reflects Johnson’s attitude towards the character: “This is a character that appears only once in a career - this is a departure from everything that I played before.” The following image shows a yellow vector version of the anti-hero on the cover, with all the attention focused on his green glowing eyes.
Black Adam indeed a character the likes of which we have not seen either in the superhero genre or in the work of Johnson. In DC comics, the super-powerful anti-hero was originally presented as a nemesis. Shazam! but was later redefined as a corrupted anti-hero trying to clear his name and reputation. Far from what we can glean from trailers and other marketing material, the live-action version seems to take on the final storyline, but not before Adam has done a lot of harm and shown us the full extent of his powers.
The trailer shown at the recently held San Diego Comic-Con also shows fans that the Justice Society of America exists to keep Adam in check and cements his choice as Doctor Fate tells Adam about his two paths: he can either become a destroyer the world or be its savior. Whatever happens, one thing is certain, in the words of Johnson himself, “the DC Universe will never be the same again.”
Johnson’s words sound more ominous now that the new CEO of Warner Bros. David Zaslavthe regime has taken over the studio and recently cut several projects, including Lesley Garsstraight to HBO Max Bat Girl movie. Together with Shazam! Fury of the gods and next year FlashJohnson’s passion project was one of those who survived the massive restructuring of Warner Bros. In these times of unprecedented change at the studio, it will be interesting to see how Black Adam rates after release.
Black Adam The movie premieres in theaters on October 21st. You can check out the posters and synopsis for the upcoming movie below.
