One (2015) is a survival competition in which 10 contestants are dropped off at remote locations tasked with living off the ground for as long as possible before being either disabled or pulled out due to security protocols. The premiere of the 9th season of the series took place Story channel in May 2022, and the 8th season was released on netflix, ranked in the top 10 on the platform in July 2022.

Literally alone, the participants document their attempts to survive in the wild, build a shelter, set up collection and/or hunting systems for food. All participants bring their experience to survival in the wild, but they all share a deep love for nature. While some films show normal civilians surviving in the wild, others to choose live outdoors. This experience does not always bode well, but it can serve as a form of catharsis or initiation rite, and it can also demonstrate the strength and resilience of the human spirit.

In wild nature (2007)

The hardships of life in the wild never abate, but in isolation, McCandless notes the deep satisfaction of living outside a land free of the trophies and distractions of modern life and expectations.

Summer kings (2013)

Summer kings is a comedy coming-of-age tale that follows three friends (Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso as well as Moises Arias) go to their not-so-isolated forest to build a cabin and live without the responsibilities of adulthood. Throwing away starring Tom Hanks as FedEx Postal Executive Chuck Noland, who finds himself stranded on an isolated island after his plane crashes in the South Pacific. Unlike many land survival stories in which characters attempt the long journey back to civilization, Chuck finds himself trapped on an island and forced to take on the very real game show stakes. Oneset up camp and survive as long as possible.

Throwing away is a gripping tale of human resilience as the average civilian faces deadly stakes while trying to make fire, take cover, find food, and provide emergency first aid with little or no equipment. With no human input, Chuck creates Wilson, a volleyball that becomes his closest friend. The spectators never thought that they would cry so much because of the loss of the ball.

Mining (2022)

Bye Mining it’s not a wilderness survival movie in the traditional sense, it’s about a young Comanche hunter (Amber Half Thunder) that showcases a variety of wilderness survival techniques to outwit the deadly Predator. The film is set in the northern Great Plains of America in 1719. The film is about members of an Indian tribe living and hunting off the land. The film is the fifth Predator series, but set before the timeline of the original Predator (1987).

For the first time, we’re introduced to Midthunder’s Naru as a skilled tracker and gatherer, knowledgeable in herbal medicine, but eager to defy gender norms to prove himself as a hunter. Going back to the basics of hunter vs hunter that made Predator the franchise is so enticing that in the film, Naru uses his knowledge of the wild as well as adapting to the environment to outsmart the alien trophy hunter.

Captain Fantastic (2016)

Captain Fantastic stars Viggo Mortensen as unorthodox father Ben, who raised his six children in isolation in the woods. Unfortunately, Ben must inform his children that their mother passed away while in hospital due to mental health issues. He then packs his children to go to her traditional funeral, while trying to stick tightly to his alternative forms of parenting.

There are many social and political arguments in the film, as Ben has become disillusioned with capitalist ideals and the modern way of life. All the kids are well versed in wilderness survival, yes, but also very well educated as Ben tries to prove his success in avoiding social norms that he finds destructive. Through a cathartic adventure, the family finds a sweet spot between the wild and the honest life while adhering to their noble ideals.

Martian (2015)

You may find that feelings One very strong in this sci-fi survival story, stuck in the environment and forced to burrow to survive, just like Throwing away. Martian follows astronaut and botanist Mark Watney (Matt Damon), whose mission goes awry and ends up on Mars, while NASA looks for a way to bring him back home.

Providing food is the most important component of trying to survive in isolation. AT One Competitors must use a variety of ways to find food, be it hunting, fishing, trapping, gathering plants or mushrooms, but there is no guarantee that they will be successful. AT MartianWatney is understandably unable to hunt in the barren Martian landscape, and instead uses his knowledge of botany to farm and grow his own food.

Tracks (2013)

Few climates are as unforgiving as the desert. Movie Tracks stars Mia Wasikowska like a real Robin Davidsonwho solo walked 1,700 miles across the Australian wilderness in 1977. The film shows Robin embarking on a perilous journey, against all the warnings of friends and family, to head west across the desert with three camels and her dog, Diggity.

Faced with intense heat, little food, plenty of predators, and the constant threat of dehydration, the film also makes stars. Adam Driver as a National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan, who tried to periodically bury the exhausted Robin in the water. The film certainly portrays the resilience of the human spirit, as she willingly faced all odds to prove others wrong.

Lord of the flies (1990)

Lord of the flies (1990) - A cautionary tale of coming of age as a group of boys struggle to survive on a lost island. The film is based on the 1954 book of the same name. William Golding and serves as a tedious tale of civilization as a group of military cadets fail miserably in running their own society.

Far from a literal premise One (2015) Lord of the flies (1990) follows 24 boys, and the multitude of different personalities vying for power can prove far more complex than a single survivor. After establishing their means of survival, such as shelter and hunting, the group attempts to formulate a hierarchy and inevitably regresses to more primitive forms of social structure, forced to survive on their own, and even more so in the wild.

Leave no trace (2018)

Leave no trace is a gripping story about a father and daughter who, ironically, feel more stuck in civilization than out in the wild. Starring Ben Foster as Will, a veteran struggling with PTSD, and his daughter Tom (Thomasin Mackenzie) the film begins with the two living off-grid in the desert before being arrested for trespassing on public land and forced to re-assimilate into society.

Based on a true story in which a father is criticized for not providing his child with standard forms of upbringing and education. Despite Tom’s advanced level of reading for her age and how she defends her father’s upbringing, the small family is faced with finding the middle ground between the fulfilling life they had in nature and the social support that modern civilization can bring.

Wild (2014)

Wild based on a true story about Cheryl Straid (Reese Witherspoon), who, with no previous experience, is trying to walk the Pacific Ridge Trail to overcome grief and rediscover herself. The Pacific Ridge Trail is a series of connecting trails that run north-south along the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains, stretching 2,653 miles from the California border of Mexico to Canada. Even experienced hikers will find this journey incredibly challenging.

Equipped with her boots, map, and the biggest backpack she’ll ever need on a trip, Cheryl tries to do what so many others try to achieve in the wild; find yourself. Learning and adapting along the way, Cheryl faces trials and tribulations that push her will and force her to confront her demons and face herself alone in the wild.
