“It is better not to buy giants, it is quite possible that they were fed with “chemistry”. The optimal weight of a potato is 40 - 70 grams, size - 7 - 8 centimeters. I do not advise taking a washed tuber either, because it will not last long. And also the potatoes that you buy for the winter should be without tears and scratches - they will deteriorate so soon.
If the potatoes are grooved, then this means that the wireworm pest savored it, and also left its larvae there. Having well examined the potatoes from the outside, you should ask the sellers to take any potatoes from the grid and cut them. You should pay attention to whether the potatoes are too juicy, because this is the main sign of excess nitrates. There should be no black spots, specks or holes inside. If this is the case, then the potato is affected by late blight, May beetles and the already mentioned wireworms.
And if there are cavities in the tuber, the so-called “hollows”, then it is “overfed” with nitrogen fertilizers or grew in dry or, conversely, too wet soil. Brown spots inside indicate that the potato has overheated in the ground, has a low starch content and contains almost no vitamin C. Such a tuber is not tasty at all, and its affected parts will have to be cut out.
According to the owner, a quality potato, when cut open, is white, yellow, reddish, cream or even purple, several tones lighter than the skin.
