President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday. They spoke, among other things, about the “need for unconditional removal of export restrictions” on Ukrainian agricultural products.
The negotiations took place during the summit of the European Political Community in Moldova. “We talked about specific ways to implement the Ukrainian +peace formula+ and about consolidating international support for Ukraine’s peace initiative. We also touched upon the topic of security guarantees that our country would like to receive before full accession to NATO. In addition, I stressed the need to unconditionally remove restrictions on the export of Ukrainian agricultural products,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter.
EU lifts blockade?
The blockade of Ukrainian grain exports, introduced in early May, is valid until June 5. As the head of the Polish Ministry of Agriculture, Robert Telus, said after the meeting of EU ministers, there were voices within the community urging not to renew it.
- For the first time, I heard from several ministers of member countries not to extend the ban on the import of grain from Ukraine after June 5th. This is not good news, but I hope it’s only a few votes and the majority will be in favor of extending this ban. Otherwise, it would be very bad news for Poland. This was stated by the Minister of Agriculture on the air of Polish Radio 24.
Blockade of Ukrainian grain
In April, Poland imposed a ban on the import of certain types of cereals, which meant that trains and trucks did not cross the Polish-Ukrainian border for several days. However, this regulation was quickly changed: until the end of May, wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds could cross the border, and sealed wagons or cars could only go to ports where grain was loaded onto ships and exported to third countries. .
Soon after Poland, Hungary banned the import of agricultural products from Ukraine. This idea was also supported by Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. The import ban was lifted on May 2, after the entry into force of EU regulations restricting the import of certain types of agricultural products from Ukraine.
