Poland’s Unimot, Avia’s gas station operator, sees no way to cash in on the mass installation of electric vehicle chargers. The company’s decision not to enter this market was reported by the ISBnews agency.
In a statement to ISBnews, Unimot President Adam Sikorski said the company is monitoring the market but there are currently no plans to install EV chargers at all Avia-branded stations. In his opinion, in Polish conditions, this business has no chance of becoming profitable yet.
Electromobility yes, but not at gas stations
“To put it simply, I don’t really believe in electromobility at gas stations. This does not mean that I do not believe in electromobility per se, or that I am against electric vehicles. However, I don’t think it’s ever realistic to replace income from traditional fuel at stations with income from selling energy to charge cars - Adam Sikorsky told ISBnews.
According to Sikorski, data from markets much more advanced in terms of electromobility than Poland show that filling stations do not play a significant role in the structure of the charging network, which should be much denser than the network of filling stations.
Different filling structure
– There are about 20 million passenger cars in Poland, which now supply fuel to less than 8,000 cars. gas stations. If the estimates are correct that in the hypothetical transfer of the entire fleet to electric vehicles, we would have to have a network of at least 1-2 million charging points, then revenues from 8 thousand. Stations need to be split into a much larger number of chargers, many of which will be installed and used in homes or workplace parking lots, reducing the need for car owners to charge from external suppliers - said the head of Unimot.
