The manufacturer from Rüsselsheim showed the first photos of the new Opel Astra Electric. Along with the all-electric five-door hatchback, the brand is also introducing the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric, the German manufacturer’s first all-electric station wagon.
Going forward, Opel Astra buyers will have more drive options than any other model with a lightning bolt logo. In addition to combustion engine versions, Opel offers the Astra and Astra Sports Tourer as plug-in hybrids, including the new Astra GSe flagship model. They will soon be joined by the all-electric Astra Electric, which will be available to order from spring 2023.
The new Opel Astra Electric and Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric boast high performance. The new Astra Electric is equipped with a 115 kW/156 hp electric motor. and a torque of 270 Nm. Both of these values are available immediately after pressing the accelerator pedal. In addition, while many electric vehicles are limited to 150 or 160 km/h, the new Astra Electric can travel at 170 km/h. Depending on the preferred driving style, the Astra Electric driver can choose from three modes: Eco, Normal and Sport.
The energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 54 kWh. It consists of 102 cells grouped into 17 modules and gives the new Astra Electric a range of up to 416 kilometers (according to WLTP). The new Astra Electric consumes 12.7 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers (14.9 kWh according to WLTP). This applies to both the five-door and the Sports Tourer station wagon. “Refilling” the electric Astra with electricity is fast. Charging a battery to 80 percent capacity at a 100 kilowatt DC fast charging station takes about 30 minutes. In addition, the Astra Electric comes standard with an 11 kW three-phase onboard charger that can be connected to a home charging station.
The battery has been hidden under the chassis so it does not reduce the amount of space available for passengers or luggage. Even with the rear seats folded down, the boot capacity of the Astra Sports Tourer Electric is 516 litres. With the rear seats folded down, the volume increases to 1553 liters.
Internal and external style
Ergonomically designed Active Sport seats with optional Alcantara upholstery provide the Astra Electric driver and passengers with signature Opel comfort. The chairs are certified by the German organization Aktion Gesunder Rücken eV (AGR; Healthy Back Campaign).
An innovative solution is the fully digital Pure Panel cockpit with two 10-inch widescreen displays around the driver. The latest generation of this HMI shows all important data such as battery life and range, while key functions including climate control can be activated at the touch of a button. Thanks to the large head-up display E-HUD and natural speech recognition, the driver does not need to take his eyes off the road. The new Intelli-Drive 2.0 package includes numerous driver assistance systems such as Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Alert, Semi-Automatic Lane Change and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. These solutions enhance safety, as does the adaptive Intelli-Lux LED pixel headlight system, which consists of 168 LED segments.
The design of the electric Astra includes an Opel Vizor front fascia and a sporty front bumper to suit all trim levels. 18-inch diamond-cut or all-black painted wheels are standard.
