CD Projekt RED has stopped ongoing work on the Witcher game Project Sirius. Several tens of millions of zlotys already spent on the mysterious game have been written off as losses, and the creators of the game will have to start from scratch.
Last year, Polish CD Projekt RED announced their rather ambitious publishing plan, releasing a remake of the first part of Geralt’s adventures, a new witcher trilogy and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.
Among the announced projects: Project Sirius. It was supposed to be a game in the Witcher universe, but with a completely different approach to playing in the world created by Andrzej Sapkowski. However, as it turns out, Project Sirius could be in serious trouble.
CD Projekt RED Relaunches The Witcher ‘Project Sirius’
The mystery game is literally written off. In an official statement to investors, the Polish company writes that the game being developed by Boston-based studio The Molasses Flood has been reset. The previous work went into the trash, and CDP will consider the funds spent on production as a loss to the business.
The Management Board of CD PROJEKT SA with its registered office in Warsaw (the “Company”) hereby announces that it has decided to write off from the books of the Company the value of development costs incurred so far in connection with the Sirius project developed by The Molasses Flood.
The cost of expenses incurred until the end of 2022 amounted to PLN 33.4 million and will be charged to the Company’s and CD PROJEKT Capital Group’s financial results for 2022. The cost of expenses previously recognized in the books in January and February 2023 amounted to up to PLN 9.5 million and will be charged to income for the first quarter of 2023 accordingly.
The Sirius project will have to wait
The Sirius Project had to be carefully evaluated for commercial potential, and as you can guess, the game’s prototype didn’t live up to the title’s expectations. Instead of taking on a project with no bright future, the Polish company decided to start over. For now, teams need to rethink what production should be.
This means that we will be waiting for the final premiere of The Sirius Project even longer than originally announced by CD Projekt RED.
