First TikTok was removed by British officials, and now all BBC journalists must get rid of the Chinese application. The public broadcaster urged employees to remove the program from the company’s smartphones amid allegations of espionage.
Just Thursday, the UK announced a ban on TikTok on government devices and an order to remove apps from smartphones and tablets used by national politicians and officials. The public broadcaster BBC now follows the administration.
BBC ban on TikTok
A message was sent to BBC staff on Sunday calling for the removal of the Chinese app.
“We do not recommend installing TikTok on a BBC corporate device unless there is a legitimate business reason to do so. If you don’t need TikTok for business reasons, TikTok should be removed.”
The BBC’s decision is a clear sign that the British are taking the risks of TikTok seriously. The British public broadcaster is one of the largest organizations of its type in the world, employing over 22,000 people.
World bans TikTok on business devices
As we wrote in Wprost.pl, US government agencies were given until the last days of March to clear all federal devices from TikTok. The removal of the app, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, continues in other countries.
Similar bans have now been independently established in Canada, the European Commission, Taiwan and the aforementioned UK.
Among other things, the Belgian intelligence services highlighted the possible threats previously noted by the Americans. TikTok collects vast amounts of information about users, often without their knowledge or informed consent. ByteDance is committed to working with Chinese intelligence.
