After the unsuccessful 2021/22 season, Legia Warsaw returned to action. Wards of Kosta Runyaich won the second place in Poland and almost to the end fought for the triumph. Michal Zhevlakov commented on the latest results of the capital club.
The past season of PKO BP Ekstraklasa was interesting until the last round. Wisla Plock and Silonsk Wroclaw fought for survival to the end. The issue of the Polish championship was decided long ago, because Rakov Częstochowa won this title earlier. Legia Warsaw finished second in the country, while Lech Poznań took the lowest step of the podium.
Michal Zhevlakov: I would have been fired from my job
Journalists of WP SportoweFakty summed up the results of the last campaign with the former football player and employee of the Warsaw Legia Michal Zhevlakov. – I recently joked that if I, when I was the sports director of Legia, had achieved the same result this season as the team from Lazenkovsk, I would have been fired from my job, – he said.
According to the former Polish representative, the expectations, but also the possibilities, were much higher when he was working. - We have won three championships, two doubles and four years in a row played in cups, including once in the Champions League. The season that has just ended is perceived as successful on Lazenkovskaya, because everyone remembers this giant crisis of the team a year earlier, Zhevlakov believes.
– But even now this “honeymoon” for coach Kosta Runjajic and his team has just ended. The expectations of Legia fans will be higher: the championship and advancement to the group stage of the Conference League, he added.
The former stopper admitted that it is difficult to play on two fronts, but the club has previously shown that it is possible. – The example of Lehi from my time shows that this can be done. You can play in the cups and successfully fight for the championship, - he stressed.
Michal Zhevlakov: Will Josue have enough for cups?
Achieving this goal should help the newly signed Marc Gual and Patrick Kuhn, as well as Josué, who extended the contract with the capital team. Previously, Michal Zhevlakov was skeptical about the idea of making a chimney for the salary of the Portuguese in Legia.
– Josue is almost 33 years old and he is one of the best Ekstraklas players. But will it be enough for cups? In the Polish league, Bartek Slish is showing his good side. And in his case, we can count on him to make progress. And we have to take care of Josue so that he doesn’t drop his level again.”
