Disney Live Action Mermaid presents an updated version of the classic 1989 cartoon. The film is a highly anticipated adaptation of the beloved story that features several major improvements, including a more layered take on Prince Eric. Already a fan favorite, Prince Eric’s live-action counterpart has the best feature, propelling him to the top of the Disney Prince rankings.
While not as popular or influential as their female counterparts, the Disney Prince lineup has some of the most memorable Mouse House characters. And while they’ll never live up to the famous Princesses franchise, Disney princes deserve their time under the sun, even if some are far superior to others.
10 Prince - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
Like the first Disney classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set many famous looks that would dominate princess films for years to come. However, it lacks the depiction of the prince to the point where the character is forgotten. The film doesn’t do well with Snow White either - indeed, it seems to be more connected to the Queen and the dwarves, giving them vivid and memorable personalities compared to the main character and her prince.
Although he did not get his own name in the film, many fans retroactively dubbed him Prince Florian. Poor Florian hardly participates in the film, appearing in two scenes and making a limited impression on the audience. If not for his wake-up kiss at the end of the film, Florian wouldn’t matter to the story. He’s the first Prince of Disney, so there’s a lot to be proud of for this feat. However, his character is too bland to be anything more than an afterthought.
9 Prince Charming - “Cinderella” (1950)
Like Florian, Prince Charming is not an important part of Cinderella. Charm appears during the ball and dances with Cinderella, instantly falling in love with her. He then spends days looking for her throughout the kingdom, using only her shoes as a clue to her identity.
Charming has more drive than Florian, that’s all. However, he is also absent from the first half of the film and never gets his proper arc; his character is seen entirely from Cinderella’s point of view, which makes him a, well, charming yet simple character. The charming character that all the fairy princes are based on, so his legacy is no small feat. However, he is also not particularly memorable; and while Cinderella might be called an underrated heroine, Charming is in many ways just a pretty guy with a crush on him who won’t die.
8 John Smith - Pocahontas (1995)
Disney Pocahontas very strange movie. Although it is based on the main character’s true story, it does not tell the facts as they happened; how could this not traumatize his target audience? Instead, he opts for a sanitized version of Pocahontas’ life, changing numerous key aspects and giving her an unhappy love story with John Smith.
Although Pocahontas is a Disney princess, John Smith is technically not a prince; he does not have royal blood and does not marry members of the royal family. However, as Pocahontas’ co-star in the film, some fans consider him to be some sort of honorary Disney prince. He is bold and ambitious, longing for adventure in the new world. John also has a strong moral compass and is not afraid to stand up to his countrymen when things go awry with the Pocahontas clan.
7 Prince Philip - Sleeping Beauty (1959)
sleeping Beauty marked a turning point in Disney animation. It was the last classic in three decades, and its poor performance led the studio to believe fairy tales were out of style. However, the film is surprisingly fresh, with more focus on the villain and supporting characters than the titular princess. Aurora may be the worst Disney princess, but that shady reputation doesn’t extend to her love interest.
Prince Philip is an amazingly dynamic character. Although he is not the main character, Phillip plays an active role in the story, helping the fairies defeat Maleficent and awakening Aurora from her mortal slumber. Philip was the first Disney prince to become a true hero; unlike Florian and Charming, who were real extras in their films, Phillip played a key role in sleeping Beautyperhaps more likable and iconic than his submissive princess.
6 Flynn Rider - “Tangled” (2010)
Eugene Fitzherbert, better known as Flynn Ryder, Deuteragonist confused. A thief with a secret heart of gold, Flynn is charming, reckless, adventurous, selfish and adventurous. He has a gift for survival, and although his actions are usually self-serving, he does not hesitate to help those in danger.
confused is one of the most romantic Disney films thanks to Flynn’s dynamic with Rapunzel. Although he acts like a scoundrel, Flynn is not a bad guy; on the contrary, he can be quite selfless and even heroic. Flynn is one of the most energetic Disney characters. And while confused was not the crushing success that Disney expected, the timing was very kind to the film. Flynn is currently a fan favorite character and many are looking forward to his inevitable real-time version.
5 Prince Naveen - The Princess and the Frog (2008)
The Princess and the Frog was innovative in terms of representation. Loose adaptation of a classic folk tale frog prince, the film featured Disney’s first Black Princess, the resourceful Tiana. Her love interest is Naveen, the carefree and irresponsible prince of Maldonia, who turns into a frog after making a dark deal with the evil Dr. Facilier.
Naveen is the prince of the new millennium. Hilarious, funny, dashing and seductive, Naveen is a one-of-a-kind character, a rebellious force of nature that breaks the classic mold of Disney princes. Unfortunately, he spends most of his film in the form of a frog, which greatly reduces his influence as a Disney prince. However, Naveen remains an interesting and compelling character throughout the film, being considered one of Disney’s best protagonists. Disney hopefully makes a live-action adaptation The Princess and the Frogand fans will get to see this underrated prince again.
4 Li-Shan - “Mulan” (1998)
1998s Mulan adapts the famous Chinese legend into a charming animated film. The story centers on Fa Mulan, a brave young woman who poses as a man in order to take her father’s place in the Chinese army. Inexperienced but willing to prove herself, Mulan proves to be a key figure in the fight against the dangerous Huns.
Despite not being a member of the royal family, Mulan is an official Disney princess and her partner, the brave soldier Li-Shan, is a Disney prince. Shan is the perfect companion for Mulan: courageous, obedient and noble. He is willing to look beyond Mulan’s status to appreciate her ability, intelligence, and drive. At a time when women were supposed to be perfect china dolls, Mulan defied convention and Shang was brave enough to stand by her side.
3 Prince Eric - The Little Mermaid (1989)
Mermaid marked the beginning of the Disney renaissance. The film ushered in a new era of classics, revived the magic of Disney, and launched the studio’s efforts to truly leverage the Disney princess brand. Mermaid also included is one of the best and most memorable Disney princes, the young and energetic Eric, a sailor and ruler of a small island kingdom.
In many ways, Eric was a model for all subsequent princes. Eric was the first Disney prince to play a significant role in history. Mermaid it took a while to turn him into something close to a 3D character. Said image may seem dated by today’s standards, but Eric was a truly original character in 1989, as was Ariel. Mermaid was the first Disney film in which the main characters bond and fall in love with each other; it could have happened in one day and seemed ridiculous from a modern point of view, but it was still a breakthrough for Disney products.
2 Prince Adam/The Beast - Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Mermaid swim so that The beauty and the Beast could take off. Widely regarded as Disney’s greatest work, The beauty and the Beast tells the story of Belle, a beautiful young French woman who agrees to live with the Beast in his enchanted castle in exchange for her father’s life.
The Beast was the first Disney prince to play as prominent a role in a film as the main character. The film is a two-way film with Belle and the Beast developing a complex, touching dynamic that reveals more about their characters. Although he spends most of the film in the form of the Beast, the character is no less attractive, his intimidating exterior contrasting with his surprisingly vulnerable inner world. The Beast proved that chivalry is not dead by creating a beautiful love story that proves Beauty into the Beastplace as the best film from the Disney Renaissance.
1 Aladdin - ‘Aladdin’ (1992)
Aladdin was one of the best films of 1992. Adaptation of the Arabic folk tale of the same name, Aladdin follows the protagonist, a savvy street thief, who finds a magic lamp in a mysterious cave of wonders. In love with the princess of the kingdom, Aladdin uses his wish to become a prince and win the heart of the princess.
Aladdin is the only Disney prince to star in his film. While Nun and Flynn are deuteragonists, Aladdin takes center stage in his film, allowing him to shine all the time in the world like the bright star that he is. Dynamic, energetic, funny, charming, intelligent and endlessly lovable, Aladdin is one of Disney’s most daring and purely entertaining creations. He could easily stand out in a room full of Disney characters thanks to a unique and lively characterization that makes him the ultimate Disney prince by a significant margin.
