Monday after Trinity: what is forbidden to do on Spirits Day

Must read

Today, June 5, according to the Orthodox Church calendar, the Day of the Ascension of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus is celebrated, and among the people - Spirits Day or Curious Monday.

On Spirits Day, the Orthodox sing of the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles.

Spirits Day is considered a direct continuation of the Trinity. Its date is constantly shifting - it falls on the 51st day after Easter. Since the date always falls on the first day of the week, it is often referred to as Spirit Monday or Holy Spirit Monday.

If in the Trinity they celebrate the ascent of the Holy Spirit to earth and, as a result, the proof of the trinity of God’s essence, then on Spirits Day they honor the Most Holy Life-Giving Spirit.

“Do not trust the heat on the Spiritual Day” - this is what our ancestors used to say. They believed that only after the 51st day after Easter, you can finally not worry about frosts - Spirits Day brings the long-awaited summer warmth.

Here are a few tips for the day:

  • what kind of weather will be on the day of the Spirit - this will last for the next 40 days;

  • after the Spirit of the day, heat sets in the street;

  • If the weather is clear that day, it will rain.

What can you do on Spirits Day

The next day after the Trinity is a favorable time for many things according to popular beliefs. Here’s what to do on this day:

  • go to the temple for worship;

  • put a candle for the repose of the soul of the deceased;

  • bring birch branches from the church - it is believed that grace will come into the house with them;

  • wash yourself in the early morning with dew, well or (in our realities) tap water - to health and preserve youth;

  • collect herbs and flowers to dry them - they believe that on Spirits Day all plants are endowed with a special healing power;

  • sincerely and wholeheartedly give gifts to the poor, engage in volunteering and charity;

  • young girls can weave wreaths and go to the nearest body of water. Throwing a wreath into the water, they look to see if they drown. If you remained on the surface - expect happiness and fast spouses. If you go to the bottom - to trouble and illness.

What Not to Do on Spirits Day

It’s best not to work if possible. Spirit Monday is considered a continuation of the Trinity, and on major holidays it is a sinful thing to work.

Do not do household chores, wash dishes, sew, knit - for the same reasons. The exception is cooking.

Under the ban - work in the garden and garden.

You can’t sweep the floor, otherwise, along with the garbage, you can sweep the joy out of the house.

Our ancestors on this day followed the clouds: if they call, then the winter will be good.

Hospitality must not be denied to anyone, otherwise the money will not flow all year;

You should not go to the cemetery - you can remember the dead in the church. It was necessary to visit the grave on Trinity paternal Saturday - the day before Pentecost.

Why is it forbidden to touch the earth on the day of the Spirit?

Superstitions related to the earth arose a very long time ago, even in pre-Christian times. After the Baptism of Rus’, they changed little, but acquired links to Christian holidays, in particular, to the Trinity and the Spiritual Day. The main of these prejudices took shape in the saying: “On Spirits Day, the earth is a birthday girl!”. It was believed that the earth celebrates its birthday, because the sowing work has just ended, and soon there will be a new harvest. And now she needs rest - the peasants did not plow, did not dig, did not protect, did not sow on Spirits Day. They believed that if you break this rule, you can stay without a crop for a year.

Therefore, the expression “touch the ground” in this sense is not literal - no one forbids touching the soil with your hands. But working in the garden or in the garden on this day is a bad omen.

Is it necessary to fast on the day of the Spirit?

The day of the Holy Spirit does not fall on a fast. Moreover, it is always celebrated on Monday, which means that the traditional moderation in food, which believers observe on Wednesdays and Fridays, is also not needed here. On the festive table, as well as on the Trinity, you can put all the meat, fish, milk. At the same time, you should still refrain from overeating and alcohol abuse, as, indeed, on any other day.
