Multiverses are all the rage these days, but let’s be realistic, does it happen that there are too many multiverses in movies? Like, we kind of ran into a wall? Given that this is science that promises an infinite number of possibilities, it’s interesting that the films we’ve received contain the same tropes. Typically, the notion of multiple universes is introduced, our leaders study the stakes that come with tinkering with these other worlds, and of course they indulge anyway. The rest of the run time for these films is spent trying to fix things and get things back to normal, and that’s it. This is what Hollywood is obsessed with right now. Of course, like any variant of the multiverse, these films contribute their own to the concept, but never do enough to justify the making of these films. Has the fascination with the multiverse dried up?
Why are the multiverses everywhere at the same time?
The multiverse has been portrayed in films for longer than many can remember. The late 2010s and especially the 2020s saw a galaxy-sized multiverse storytelling boom. Marvel has continued to promote this storytelling technique in recent films such as Spiderman: No Way Home And Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness.
The current movie saga in the MCU is literally called the “Multiverse Saga”, mirroring the previous “Infinity Saga”. Most of their recent and future results are entirely based on this scientific concept. Not only have they brought in new and different versions of classic Marvel characters like Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), but also bringing in previous incarnations from past film series such as Patrick StewartX Professor X. Even DC has caught on to this approach to multiverse storytelling. We will see not only a return Ben AffleckX Batman in Flash but also Michael Keaton like Bruce Wayne! Where is the emphasis on the plot in these films, and how shocking is that?
“Everything everywhere at once” reinvented the concept
Well then there is All Everywhere All At Once. Sometimes a movie comes along that sets the world on fire with its revolutionary ideas, concepts, special effects, story, and everyone on the planet jumps on board. If you thought it was all hype spider verse, Everything is everywhere somehow managed to multiply this enthusiasm. Both the general public and Hollywood loved the film so much that it won the 95th Academy Awards, taking home almost every award it was nominated for, including Best Picture.
Everything is everywhere this is a slightly different case than recent superhero films that explore the multiverse. It’s a small, independent production that had a lot less money and iconography, as opposed to something like a $200 million flash movie with Michael Keaton’s Batman. Daniels had to create a truly touching family drama that would work on its own, with or without elements of science fiction.
There is no doubt that they have achieved this, but Everything is everywhere it’s kind of like a “baby’s first movie” case. This applies to other films as well, for example Origin or Matrix, truly great movies with galactic brain ideas that capture and revolutionize the stories that can be told in movies. They’re great, but they’re also very affordable entertainment, and with their fresh and exciting sci-fi concepts, they’re going to get a little more credibility than they should. Again, Everything is everywhere still great, but should it win Best Picture, or is Hollywood just excited about the new popularization of the multiverse?
Are multiverses fun, tiring, or both?
Everything is everywhereThe huge success at this year’s Oscars could be the perfect occasion for a multiverse craze, but we’re not out of the jungle yet. Only this June we have both Spiderman: Across the spade verse And Flash two films are being released that are deeply indebted to this idea. Plus, we’re still deep into this current MCU saga, not to mention all the other options and other dimensions movies that haven’t been officially announced yet. Looking at a small part of the projects of the multiverse over the past few years, you quickly tire! It must be what it was in the early 2000s after Matrix bullet time entered. Luckily for this audience, with accelerated time, you might have to sit for a few seconds of nasty slow motion. The storylines of the multiverse are too big for a five second reference. These stories have to take up entire films, and Hollywood gives us batches of them.
Everything is everywhereX The success of the Oscars should not have given Hollywood the green light to release more of these films, nor should it No way home to be a blockbuster model to bring back actors who have long abandoned their most iconic roles. Studios will always strive to win as many awards as possible. Clearly, a cash cow is a huge draw! But if we sit back and think about what we’re doing here, all we’re doing is telling the same stories over and over again. For example, watch Doctor Strange warn Spider-Man about the consequences of playing with the multiverse in No way homeand then watch Batman tell The Flash about the time travel romp in the trailer Flash. What do Spider-Man and the Flash do? They go ahead and dabble in the multiverse, realize they made a mistake, and have to make it right. These films are too similar.
Then there’s the element that first made the live multiverses exciting, and then very quickly turned into a deeply cynical move to get asses in place. Remember how cool it was when Leonard NimoyX Spock appeared in the first JJ Abrams Star TrekDespite Zachary Quinto did the same character play there? It was crazy! Fast forward twelve years to find Tobey Maguire And Andrew Garfield screen sharing with Tom Holland V No way home. Of course, this is a convoluted film with a plot built literally only for these three actors to be together on the screen, but when the idea What fun, you will take any means necessary to get there.
It doesn’t look like the multiverse isn’t going anywhere.
Will Michael Keaton return as Batman? Although not a multiverse, Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine Deadpool 3, although he already had the perfect send-off? Does this time frame also hurt your brain? Remember before Multiverse of Madness came out and people just wanted to speculate about the options we might see in this movie? What Tom Cruise was going to show up as Iron Man or something like that? It turned out this movie wasn’t meant to be filled with pointless, calorie-dense cameos, and fans were upset.
How will we see how the studios react to how fans have reacted to Multiverse of MadnessX no cameos? When do movies stop being real movies and instead become a dopamine rush into the brains of nostalgia-hungry fans who just want to see something from their childhood on screen? Fun is fun, but how far are we willing to give up on introducing something new and end up relying on our past to the detriment of it? Like the multiverse itself, the future of this predicament could go anywhere.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-VerseThis man’s early reactions are wonderful, so it looks like the webhead’s next big animated adventure is sure to rock everyone, everywhere, all at once. However, there are apparently over 250 Spider-Man in this movie, so maybe we should talk a little about what exactly we’re doing here. 250 Spider-Man is a fun idea and all, but if we’re going to be telling multiverse stories, let’s maybe go further in the spirit of thoughtfulness and character control, like Everything is everywhere. Big sci-fi concept films should focus on the sci-fi concept at hand, rather than digging through the bin of action figures and looking for your favorite version of Batman that you have. Like all trends in Hollywood, multiverse films will see huge ups and downs, and eventually disappear into yesterday’s news. Moving forward, let’s hope this quirk doesn’t change things for the worse.
