At the start of the first season, Lance and Brooke had just broken up after a four-year relationship. Brooke thought Lance was immature and too dreamy. He’s dabbing and obsessed with wild shoe ideas while working at Foot Locker. At first, Brooke hides the breakup from Pat’s mother (Molly Shannon), forcing them to reunite at a dinner she organizes. They keep bumping into each other after that, and Brooke eventually feels she’s ready to give her relationship another try. Lance rejects her as he wants to continue exploring loneliness.

The second season begins with Pat again inviting Lance to a family dinner (in Blake Livelynew restaurant! Brooke confesses that he broke her heart and asks him to leave. They meet again at the 30 Under 30 event where Lance reveals that his shoe ideas have finally paid off and he is partnering with Nike. Lance is still charming, noble and well-intentioned, but now he is dating someone else. They continue to be friends, and he celebrates her acquaintances and professional endeavors, and also launches his own clothing line. On the fateful night when they are alone, their sexual tension escalates to the point where they masturbate together, causing him to break up with his girlfriend.

At the start of Season 3, it is revealed that Brooke and Lance are finally engaged. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he began breastfeeding, and almost everyone around Brooke considers him a hero. She reunites with JoeAli An), who is now an anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist and only participated in the Capitol uprising to make herself feel better. Lance notices this and tells Brooke of her cruel intentions in the fifth episode. He shows emotional growth as he tries to continue to be a positive influence in Brooke’s life.

After Brooke drives a lure with a picture of his brother Chase (Case Walker) armpit to Los Angeles, her frustration with a pointless job causes her to retire from the “industry”. She eventually feels she must do something as altruistic as Lance and enrolls in a tree planting charity. During a three-day performance featuring Carey (Drew Tarver) boyfriend Lucas (Fin Argus), Brooke tries to make amends for Chase’s career with Streeter (Ken Marino) and Shuli (Wanda Sykes). When Lance notices this, he becomes angry at Brooke’s reticence.

What follows is a fight that is rooted in Brooke’s own insecurities and their incompatibility. Brooke claims he feels like he’s judging her - like when he said her work can sometimes be stupid. That time, she caught insults and basically made him say it. It’s heartbreaking how Brooke’s self-centeredness makes Lance feel like everything is around her and that he doesn’t matter. Lance’s dialogue was mostly a monologue, as Brooke can’t seem to find anything sensible to answer. She was unable to overcome her own judgment and the fight was inconclusive. Through Yorke’s pent-up tears, you can see Brooke’s pain at holding everything back, and Segarra is the only one who can say “dude” so many times and still be damn irresistible.

Lance and Brooke have gone through quite a few trials in their relationship. This is the first season in which we see them officially as a couple, and this has brought serious problems that will be difficult to overcome. Both of them achieved success while they were apart, so why can’t they continue this streak? Let’s see what the future holds for them as new episodes continue to drop weekly on Max until June 29th.
