The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. About it WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. He also announced the termination of the WHO emergency committee.
According to him, on May 4, the Emergency Situations Committee met for the fifteenth time and recommended declaring an end to the public health emergency, which is of international importance.
“I took this advice. Therefore, with great hope, I declare the end of COVID-19 as a global health emergency.”Gebrees said.
According to him, the pandemic has been on a downward trend for more than a year.
“Population immunity is growing thanks to vaccination and infection, mortality is decreasing and the pressure on health systems is being eased. This trend has allowed most countries to return to the life we knew before COVID-19.”said the chairman of the WHO.
At the same time, Ghebreyesus noted that this does not mean that the coronavirus is no longer a global health threat.
“This virus remains. It still kills and still changes. The risk remains that new strains will emerge, causing new surges in disease and death. Last week, COVID-19 claimed a life every three minutes - and these are just the deaths we know about.”- he said.
The head of WHO noted that in three years the organization reported almost 7 million deaths, but their number is several times higher - at least 20 million.
It should be noted that more than 111 thousand people died in Ukraine due to coronavirus disease. According to the chief state sanitary doctor of Ukraine Ihor Kuzin, COVID-19 “should move to seasonal diseases” and will circulate like a regular flu.
