During wound healing, proper care is important. However, the problem arises in the case of chronic wounds, ie. those that heal for more than a few weeks despite proper topical treatment. The result of this is, among other things, human suffering. However, thanks to the research, there is a chance to speed up this process, the results are really promising.
Special technology thanks to which wounds heal much faster
Healing wounds three times faster sounds abstract? It turns out that everything is possible thanks to the biochipwhich scientists have developed to carefully study the relationship between electrical stimulation and therapeutic effect.
The human body produces its own electromagnetic field, and it is this field that is responsible, among other things, for the movement of skin cells - it can push them in the direction where the wound is currently located. Scientists decided to enhance this effect. It has been known that electricity can promote the healing process of wounds, but this relationship is not fully understood.
Researchers at the University of Freiburg in Germany they grew artificial skin on a bioelectronic platformIt is made up of cells called keratinocytes. It is this cell type that most often plays a decisive role in the process of wound healing.
How was the experiment to accelerate wound healing?
During the study, scientists subjected artificial skin to electrical stimulation. The cells, thanks to the artificial stimulus, moved three times faster. As a result, the artificial leather was repaired in a much shorter time than usual. During the experiment, the researchers also simulated diabetes in the cells - then the wounds healed very slowly. However, thanks to electrical stimuli, healing was accelerated, so that the cells affected by diabetes almost completely corresponded to healthy skin cells.
New technology as a lifesaver for people with chronic wounds
Faster wound healing can be a lifesaver for people suffering from chronic wounds, such as diabetics, people with poor circulation, the elderly, or wounds due to postoperative complications.
“Chronic wounds are a huge social problem that is not talked about much,” explains Maria Asplund, a bioelectronics scientist at the University of Freiburg and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. The next step in the research is to see if the method works on living people, not just lab-grown skin cells.
There are plans to develop practical applications that will turn into cheap and readily available materials for use in real situations. This is important because the longer the skin is closed, the higher the risk of infection, which in turn can further delay wound healing. In extreme cases, this can even lead to amputation.
