Heart rhythm disturbances can be completely harmless, but in extreme cases they can even be fatal. What are arrhythmias and when does an arrhythmia require medical intervention?
Severe arrhythmias were reported by the family of Polish jumper David Kubacki as the reason for the hospitalization of his wife Marta Kubacka on Sunday morning. Dawid Kubacki resigned from the very beginning and sent a touching message on social media: “My wife Marta was hospitalized for cardiac reasons, her condition is serious, and the doctors are fighting for her life. She is in good hands, she is a strong girl, I know she will fight.”
What are arrhythmias?
As he says in an interview with “Wprost”, prof. Marcin Grabowski, representative of the Polish Society of Cardiology, an abnormal heart rhythm can take many forms. - It can even be single additional contractions of the heart, there can be several such contractions, and they can form a whole cycle. There really is no sharp line between normal and abnormal, since any healthy person can have a certain amount of extrasystoles that we can tolerate. For a healthy heart, these extra contractions can be hard, but they’re not dangerous, the cardiologist explains. He adds that in extreme cases, abnormal heart rhythms can lead to death.
Serious arrhythmias - what are the symptoms?
The most severe consequence of arrhythmia is cardiac arrest. A pronounced arrhythmia is indicated by malaise, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, and difficulty in movement. “Patients also clearly feel this disturbed heart rhythm. They say they feel like their heart is about to jump out of their throat. We call it heart palpitations, it’s just that the heart beats very fast, says prof. Grabovsky.
How to respond to cardiac arrhythmias?
prof. Marcin Grabowski advises not to underestimate episodes of arrhythmia, even if they do not interfere with daily activities. - In such a situation, it is necessary to strive to perform an ECG test. Arrhythmias can be mild, they can be dangerous, but until we have an ECG record, we don’t really know what’s there, the specialist says and reminds that heart rhythm disturbances can also manifest themselves in normal home blood pressure. monitor. - If the patient regularly measures blood pressure and the doctor asks about the measurements, then it is worth noting that, for example, a special indicator, which many blood pressure monitors have, showed that the heart rhythm is not correct, says prof. Grabovsky.
He adds that cardiac arrhythmias are not always dependent on the individual - they can be the result of heart disease or genetic factors. But there is no doubt that the risk of developing arrhythmia increases with an unhealthy lifestyle, including alcohol abuse and smoking.
