If you’re anything like us, you’re counting down the days until the latest installment of Netflix’s small screen adaptation. Witcher will appear on the streamer later this week, but this time the premiere of the 3rd season will not take place immediately. Instead, the season will be divided into two parts, or “volumes,” which will not only extend our return to the continent a little longer, but extend our time with Henry Cavill like Geralt of Rivia before he bows one last time like the White Wolf. (Back in October last year, it was reported that Cavill in this role will replace Liam Hemsworth for the upcoming season 4.)

But you might also be interested to know that the upcoming Season 3 wasn’t originally intended to be a split release - apparently it just happened to be. During a feast with members WitcherThe Collider production team was able to get some insight into how another Netflix series actually pioneered the groundwork in this regard thanks to the executive producers. Steve Gaub And Tomek Baginski. Season 3 wasn’t built around any planned hiatus, according to Gaub, but the creative decision got them excited for allowing:

“Fortunately Stranger Things came out while we were in production and they split the seasons. It was very convincing to us because you can’t enjoy a mid-season cliffhanger on a streaming show that’s coming out right away. and you kind of want the fans to have that experience. So for us it was more about deciding which episode would be cut. Netflix was totally on board with that and I think it’s going to be fun for our fans because it’s getting to expand the experience a little more and give us a complete Witcher summer.”

The producers of The Witcher hint that dark times are ahead of us

While the main group, consisting of Geralt, Ciri (Freya Allan), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Buttercup (Joey Baty) seem to be more cohesive than ever - aside from Geralt still struggling with whether to forgive Yennefer for what played out in Season 2 - there are still big threats looming in the distance, especially when it comes to different factions. on the continent who have their own plans for Ciri. Tension builds in the background, but the producers also wanted to make sure the characters had enough moments of frivolity and happiness before the inevitable happened.

“This is the calm before the storm,” Baginsky said. “Dark times are coming, and those who are familiar with the books know where things are going and that things will not be so good in the future. So we wanted to spend some time with these characters to show them from a different angle. with them is another side of them: they are together, they are a family, they explore certain different emotions and go through humanity, love, normal life and normal tensions, because, like everything in the world, this will end.

Nevertheless, Witcher it’s technically an adaptation, meaning that the creative parties behind the Netflix series lack work when it comes to deciding what to keep, what to take away, and what to expand in ways that might not be in the source material. According to Baginski, the book Season 3 is based on gave them a lot of work, which meant making certain decisions about when to stick with the source and when to deviate:

“These things are decided on a per-page basis, almost because there are so many small decisions to make while working on a story. What was a little easier for us this season is that the book “Time of Contempt”, which is the second book of the saga, is very, very rich in very important events, a lot of storylines are already there, so we did not have to develop as many additional storylines and subplots, like season 2 was a joyous thing and a very, very good one… There is, for example, the complicated politics of the continent that are fascinating in the books, and we realized very early on that not everything could be translated [in] Also. We had to make some simplifications because this show is not about politics. This show is about Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri and Buttercup. Their adventures are the most important.”

season 3 Witcher will be divided into two parts: volume 1 will premiere on Netflix on June 29, and volume 2 will appear on the streamer on July 27.
