Telling a tragic but fascinating story, The Truman Show stars Jim carrey in a critically acclaimed 1998 film that follows the life of a man who lives in a realistic set, with the people around him acting as the show’s actors, completely unbeknownst to him. Soon Truman found out about the terrible lies that he lived all this time, and decided to leave this world, giving his last bow. Two decades later The Truman Show writer Andrew Niccol shares his TV show feed on what happened after Truman walked through the sky.

What happened after Truman left Seahaven Island remains a mystery at the end of the movie, but maybe we can figure it out eventually. In an interview with Screen Rant, the Oscar-nominated writer spoke about the 1988 science fiction classic, which is now 25 years old. As viewer consumption of entertainment, especially reality shows, remains more pervasive than ever, Niccol shared his idea for a sequel to the film - and it’s as compelling as it is terrifying. He said:

“There have been talks about doing a musical – believe it or not – or a series. When it’s a different art form, I don’t think it takes anything away from the original. In my version of the series, I thought it would be fun if, after Truman walked through the sky, the audience demanded more (what you feel at the end of the movie). I suppose there would be a multi-channel network that would all film themes born in the show.”

Extending the reach of Seahaven Island

Niccol plans to continue the film, completely abandoning the Truman story. Instead, he wanted it to look like there were networks doing the same terrible and, by all means, ingenious TV concept for the movie. His presentation focused on two unfortunate lovers, and he continued:

“If I set it up in New York, there would be a girl living on the Upper East Side, a boy from Harlem, a kid from Chinatown, etc. Since they are all on their own channel and moving in their own circles, they never weren’t going to meet. But at the end of the first season, a Harlem boy and a rich girl find themselves drawn to each other. They both feel like the other is behaving differently than anyone they’ve ever met…since they’ve met someone who doesn’t play! In Season 2, the Network was desperate to end their romance.”

Though Niccola’s serve is just potential The Truman Show sequel, we can’t wait to see if the writer’s vision comes to fruition. In the meantime: “Good afternoon, good evening and good night!”
