As the release date for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom slowly sailing towards us, new details about the sequel begin to emerge, and the director behind it has just revealed the biggest problem for the film’s production. During an interview with Hollywood Reporter, James Wan talked about how the current changes to the DCU landscape were a little tricky to follow during the making of the film, stating that he needed to pay close attention to what would actually be canon and what would be left on the cutting room floor. Here’s what Wang had to say about how the DCU changes affected the Aquaman sequel:

I had to make adjustments along the way. The DCU went through a lot of different iterations and one of the tricky things about this film was keeping track of what was going on. Fortunately, Aquaman The universe is quite far from the rest of the world. We go to many different underwater kingdoms that are not necessarily related to what happens with other films and characters, so we are autonomous in this respect. So I can just tell my story without much influence, but at the same time I have to be aware of what’s going on.

According to the director, the fact that Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), and the characters close to him stay in the ocean, which helps him stay away from what is happening to the universe as a whole. However, due to the upcoming reset from James Gunn And Peter Safranvision for the franchise, Wang had to be on the lookout to make any necessary adjustments to his storytelling. Ultimately, the studio intends to maintain a unified framework across every upcoming film, TV series and video game associated with the brand, creating a shared media universe so powerful it can compete with competitors.
