As the trend for over-reliance on CGI spreads in Hollywood, director Greta Gerwig insisted that her upcoming project use physical sets Barbieto give the film a “genuine artificiality” feel. However, a fantasy world fit for a blonde slut comes at a cost, as the film’s production designer said. Sarah Greenwood revealed that so much pink paint was used for the film’s set that it apparently led to an international shortage.

While the film is centered around a classic line of puppet toys known for their superficiality, Gerwig wanted to give the film a sense of authenticity by choosing to use physical sets and even going so far as to use hand-drawn backgrounds rather than CGI. While the director wanted to create “an alternate universe of Barbie Land,” she explained to Architectural Digest, “everything had to be tactile, because toys are, first of all, things you touch.” This, along with Gerwig’s decision to remove the doors and walls, makes the film look like it’s set in an enlarged Barbie’s Dreamhouse.

This desire to give the film a childish quality was at the heart of the production design, as Greenwood explained that “preserving the ‘childishness’ was paramount” and Gerwig required everything on set to be pink. Greenwood continued, “I wanted the pinks to be very bright and everything was almost too much” to “remember what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl.” So much was used in the creation of the kits that there was an international shortage of Rosco’s fluorescent pink color; “The world has run out of pink,” she said. When creating large scenes for the film, the musicals were also used as a source of inspiration - not only for the visual world of the film, but also for the performances in the film.
