It goes without saying that film marketing is a complex task. The creative minds behind promoting a movie before release need to get people interested enough to give up the ticket money, or at least a good deal of their precious time if it’s a streaming release. Teasers, full-length trailers, TV spots, interviews, and even things like the title and poster need to be considered to successfully promote most films.
Some releases end up being harder to sell than others, resulting in the film not working or receiving mixed reviews from critics. All of these films fall into one of these camps, and some fall into both camps, showing that when it comes to engaging potential viewers, the marketing department has to work for them.
1 ‘Babylon’ (2022)
An extremely long film filled with crude humor and reckless behavior. Babylon it would always be difficult to sell to a wide audience. This is a vivid and often loud look at Hollywood in the silent film era and how the transition to sound films has affected people working in the film industry. It also touches on the enormous sacrifices that have been made throughout history in the name of filmmaking.
With its gritty and sometimes disturbing plot, over three hours long and a tone that oscillates between comedy and tragedy. Babylon a lot to manage and it seemed to turn a lot of viewers off. Marketing didn’t properly explain what the movie was about, and even a director like Damien Chazelle, plus stars like Margot Robbie And Brad Pitt, unfortunately could not prevent Babylon from box office disappointment.
2 ‘Little Soldiers’ (1998)
Little Soldiers it is a film that sits somewhere between a children’s film and a film for a mature audience, which would make advertising it a burdensome task. Its plot involves children’s toys being implanted with military grade AI microchips and the chaos this causes when two different toy factions actually come to life and decide to start a war.
It’s definitely a lot darker and more violent than something like toy story, but it also focuses on the child protagonist and doesn’t go too far with adult content and humor. It’s a pity that this is the kind of movie that might not fully appeal to the target audience, because it ends up being an enjoyable and well-made movie, and its weird tone certainly helps it stand out.
3 ‘Cats’ (2019)
A few years after the release of “Cats” in 2019. cats, the whole movie still seems like a bit of a feverish dream. It is an adaptation of the famous stage show of the same name, which is about a large group of anthropomorphic cats who all want to access the Heaviside layer, which is their equivalent of paradise. However, there can only be one, which leads to each cat essentially arguing that they should be chosen with musical numbers.
It’s hard to know who this film is for. Fans of the stage musical will probably not like the changes made, children will probably find the cats themselves too scary to watch, and adults are unlikely to find the children’s humor and music interesting unless they want to laugh at the film. . This probably contributed to the fact that the film earned less than its budget at the box office.
4 ‘Light Year’ (2022)
Instead of being hard to sell based on just something like his tone or style of humor, Light year It’s a tough movie to sell based on its premise alone. He’s based on a familiar character, but technically exists in the world toy story movies, as it was apparently a movie Andy watched in the 1990s that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy.
It doesn’t help that, even if potential audiences realize it, the film’s wobbly tone, unmemorable characters, and underwhelming story don’t make it easy to publicize. Reviews weren’t great overall, and even if it made just over $200 million worldwide, the fact that it had a $200 million budget doesn’t make it a big box office success.
5 ‘Caligula’ (1979)
While it may exist today as something of a whimsical cult classic, Caligula was considered a notorious failure upon release. This is a very messy and gruesome story set almost 2000 years ago detailing the rise to power and subsequent fall Caligulawho was the third emperor of Rome.
Ultimately, production problems are provided Caligula it will never be easy to market yourself in front of an audience, mainly because the writer and director didn’t agree with the lead producer about how the movie was going to be. So the finished product feels uncomfortably torn between two sides: the creative minds who wanted to create a violent, tragic historical epic, and the producer who wanted (and did) add adult graphic content featuring Penthouse models.
6 ‘Birds of Prey’ (2020)
Predator birds can’t be blamed for his ambition. It aimed to portray Harley Quinn’s character as funnier and more off-balance than she had previously been seen in live action, and to do so, as well as introduce the titular Birds of Prey, an all-female crime-fighting gang that Harley Quinn joins.
All this led to a film that was very funny in places, but at the same time quite confusing. The comedy was silly, but the violence was horrendous, which meant the film could not be marketed to younger audiences who might enjoy lighter stuff. Also, those who wanted more Birds of Prey scenes may have been disappointed that Harley Quinn had overshadowed the show, while Harley Quinn fans who weren’t interested in Birds of Prey might feel the opposite.
7 “Godzilla vs. Hedorah” (1971)
Despite having many Godzilla films that plunge into unfamiliar territory, Godzilla vs Hedorah should be one of the strongest. In it, Godzilla confronts a giant monster known as Hedorah, who was born from an alien life form merging with a large pile of pollution in the Sea of Japan.
Its whimsical premise makes it an iconic cult classic. Godzilla a movie, but admittedly one where it’s hard to tell who the target audience was. There’s light-hearted music and the humor can be silly (Godzilla even flies at one point), but some of the action can be gruesome, the atmosphere is dark, and Hedorah has a creepy appearance. It’s amazingly strange things for hardcore Godzilla fans, but it can’t be classified as either a children’s or an adult monster movie.
8 “The Last Action Hero” (1993)
When a film manages to parody a genre, yet still belongs to that genre, its marketing can end up being difficult. This is the case when The last fighterwhich was released at the height Arnold Schwarzeneggerpopularity, and functions as an action movie and parody of the action movies for which Schwarzenegger became famous.
The tone can be quite confusing while watching the movie, which ensured that creating the movie’s wild premise and mixing genres in something as short as a trailer was inevitably difficult. It ended up not doing well at the box office, but became something of a cult classic.
9 ‘Chappie’ (2015)
After making two relatively serious sci-fi films - District No. 9 (2009) and Elysium (2013) - Neil Blomkamp released a slightly more playful film from 2015 Chappie. It follows a police robot in the hands of two gangsters who effectively raise the newly minted robot and train it to help them with a robbery.
The result is a strange film with a simple, sometimes even childish plot, but also with graphic violence and an abundance of profanity. The marketing department wouldn’t have enough work if they were trying to convince an older audience to give Chappie chance given that some of the content was closed to younger viewers.
10 Star Wars: Skywalker. Sunrise (2019)
Ninth (and presumably last) star Wars movie in The Skywalker Saga was an undeniable box office success. It topped $1 billion at the box office, but ultimately did not earn as much as its predecessors: Episode 7 ($2 billion) and Episode 8 ($1.3 billion).
Its performance compared to other films in Sequel Trilogy may have been because enthusiasm for the series has waned and the fan base is more divided than ever. Marketing had to convince those who didn’t like Episode 8 What Episode 9 will be a course correction as well as a promise to complete the story developed in the previous films. This resulted in disappointing reviews from critics and box office performance unmatched by its predecessors.
