Imagine the inexplicable horror of an event when it can only be described - not shown - on a streaming platform that is considered the most unruly of all formats. Don’t fuck with cats focuses on such real actions that will leave a frightening effect on the audience, as well as on cats and people. Mark LewisThe Netflix documentary series is about a new-age manhunt made possible by the internet to catch a killer who equally allows the anonymity offered by the virtual world to commit crimes that only get more violent over time. Events in Don’t fuck with cats any day could make a great horror movie if it didn’t actually happen.
True crime documentaries show two sides of the virtual world that exists on the Internet. While one side thrives on the sense of community that the online world brings, the other reflects the level of depravity that abounds on the internet. As the hunt for the internet killer gathers momentum, people from all over the world come together to put an end to it. Don’t fuck with cats a triumphant saga about stopping the actions of an inhuman criminal. At the same time, it also highlights how the need for fame and recognition becomes the biggest motivator that pushes a person towards the unthinkable. The internet provides the perfect vehicle for Luca Magnotta’s debauchery, who may have been further motivated to delve deeper into his dark crimes thanks to the initial attention he received.
‘Don’t Fuck Cats’ talks about the Internet’s obsession with a killer
Magnotta was introduced to the world when a YouTube video titled “1 Boy 2 Kittens,” featuring a hooded man vacuuming two kittens until they suffocate and die, went viral. The video led to the creation of a Facebook group made up of Internet sleuths who wanted to find who was responsible for the video. Thus began the hunt to find the person who bonded with the most precious of creatures, according to the documentary series’ narrative, cats. With Dinna Thompson using a Facebook profile under the name Bowdy Muwan and popular writer John Green investigating to find the kitten killer, the man behind the action is also starting to enjoy the spotlight. After his first video in 2010, he released another video a year later. In the second video, he drowned a kitten by tying it to a broom with duct tape. The video was titled “Bathtime LOL”.
As the depravity of the anonymous man’s crimes grew, so did the obsession of Internet sleuths who wanted the man behind bars at all costs. Using clues from uploaded videos, the investigation set out to find the internet killer. When people from all over the world join the case, including a biker gang, the investigation achieves some success as it turns out that the man is a former aspiring actor named Luca Rocco Magnotta. But before the group gets a taste of success, they will also face the grim reality of the investigation they have been leading. A man named Edward Jordan became the object of the group’s wrath when he was mistaken for a kitten killer.
Already suffering from depression, Jordan later committed suicide. While he may or may not have acted as a result of being the target of an online witch hunt, it is too naïve to argue that this could not have had any possible role. At this point, like Magnotta, the investigating team is also settling for death, albeit unconsciously. Here, Don’t fuck with cats attempts to show for the first time how complacent the group pursuing Magnotta could be, pushing the man to further popularity through their crimes.
Magnotta reached the height of his notoriety when Lin Jun, a Chinese student, became his latest victim, causing the police to intervene. After uploading a video depicting Lin Jun being killed with a screwdriver disguised as an ice pick and dismembering Jun’s body, Magnotta commits cannibalism and necrophilia before mailing the body to various parts of the city, including the offices of the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party of Canada. . The police initially refused to believe the video, but confirmed that the video was genuine. CCTV footage confirmed that Magnotta was behind the killing, as he was last seen with the victim, who was identified as Ling Jun.
Luca Magnotta’s crimes were inspired by pop culture
Magnotta managed to escape to Paris, where he managed to evade the police for a while before making his way to Berlin. In France, Magnotta used a passport with the name “Kirk Tramell”. However, the manhunt ended in Berlin when he was identified in an Internet cafe and arrested by local police. Coincidentally, at the time of his arrest, Magnotta was reading stories of his own crimes. This fact became another cliche in Magnotta’s quest for popularity, as the media portrayed him as a psychopath hungry for fame. Magnotta’s history as an unsuccessful model and controversial past did not help his cause when it came to his public image.
It was later revealed that Luca Magnotta was inspired Sharon Stonecharacter Katherine Tramell, the main antagonist of the erotic thriller The basic Instinct. Ling Jun was killed off in the exact same way that Johnny Boz’s character was killed off in the film. Magnotta later confessed to the crimes under pressure from a man named Emanuel “Manny” Lopez, but it turned out that Manny was also named former boyfriend Katherine Tramell from the movie. As expected, Magnotta was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes, although his mother believes that he was targeted by a bunch of Internet psychos for no reason.
‘Don’t Fuck with Cats’ explores the true crime genre
Despite the grim reality that the docu-series portrays, there are deeper and more horrifying questions in the series of events. First, the series requires introspection from a group of Internet sleuths who did most of the investigation. The possibility is explored that Magnotta would never have killed a human by killing kittens if he had not attracted as much attention to himself as he did. Moreover, at the end of the documentary series, it is even said that Don’t fuck with cats also ultimately serves Magnotta’s ultimate goal: achieving glory. If one doesn’t realize this over the course of the docu-series, the truth will take some time to sink in before realizing that it does ultimately serve Magnotta’s motivation to get more attention.
In addition to being a well-crafted docu-series that follows another haunting true-crime story, Don’t fuck with cats puts the entire true crime genre in a confession box, as killers always become popular names and victims are forgotten - fate has put Lin Jun on too. Although the question of whether Magnotta’s actions were dictated by the fame that came to him through his actions is still debatable, Don’t fuck with cats presents a series of events in such a way that the participants as well as the spectators are responsible for their intrigues in the real crime. If anything Don’t fuck with cats manages to leave the viewer with questions that may be obvious but still worth asking.
