When Ann Hataway first appeared to the world as Mia Thermopolis in Princess DiariesIt was clear from the start that she had a promising career ahead of her. And that promise was indeed kept: in the years that followed, she went on to appear in a wide variety of films, from independent dramas to big Hollywood musicals and outlandish films about alcoholism and abuse.
Her last role was in James GrayX Time of Armageddon, in which she plays a struggling mother trying to raise her son amid the political and economic chaos of the Reagan years. In 2023, she will also star in Eileen, a thriller about two women who become close while working in a prison. Her role is the glamorous Rebecca, with whom the titular Eileen (Thomasin Mackenzie) falls in love. As we wait for this new movie to come out, here are nine of our favorite Hathaway roles, from astronaut to kaiju.
Dr. Amelia Brand in ‘Interstellar’ (2014)
Christopher NolanX Interstellar some sort of divisive movie. Some consider it to be one of the greatest works of science fiction in recent history, while others consider it nothing more than an overrated melodrama. No matter which side you are on, there are two things about Interstellar what you can’t deny: the visuals are amazing and almost all of the actors are top notch.
As Dr. Amelia, Brand Hathaway delivers an emotional performance that gives the film much of its heart. And love it or hate it, her speech about love as a transcendent power is definitely one of those scenes that define the entire movie.
Jane Austen in Become Jane (2007)
After Joe Wrightfavorite adaptation Pride and Prejudicewho took our collective obsession Jane Austen to a whole new level, Hathaway played Austin herself in this romantic biopic. Director Julian Jarroldin the center of the plot of the author’s novel with the Irish politician Thomas Lefroy (James McAvoy).
Born with a face that makes her perfect for any Austen novel, Hathaway turns this charming but unremarkable film into a delightful spectacle, imbuing her character with just the right doses of meaning and sensibility - just like a good Jane Austen should be.
Esther Graff in ‘Armageddon Time’ (2022)
Directed by James Gray Time of Armageddon is an honest, tender coming-of-age drama based on the director’s own experiences growing up in Queens during the early years of the Reagan administration. Played by a relative newbie Banks of RepetPaul Graff replaces Grey, a young Jewish boy who befriends a black classmate and learns the hard way about world inequality.
Anne Hathaway plays the role of Esther Graff, Paul’s strict but caring mother in the film. Portrayed with kindness and a deep sense of respect for the hardships the character faces, Esther tries to teach her son to look at the world with kind eyes, but eventually gets bogged down in her own prejudices.
Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
It’s much easier to recognize acting talent when they make you cry than when they make you laugh. This is one of the reasons why comedies have such a poor track record of awards. But that doesn’t make making comedy an easy task. IN The Devil Wears PradaHathaway puts on his (Chanel) comedy boots and invites us for a ride in what became one of the best dramedies of the first decade of the 2000s.
Andy Sachs is an aspiring writer who takes a job with demanding fashion editor Miranda Priestley.Meryl Streep). Initially frustrated and overwhelmed, Andy decides to learn how to navigate the borderline abusive environment. WFP magazine. Devil was one of Hathaway’s first high-profile positions after Princess Diariesand it’s amazing to see how she holds up in a lineup full of big names like Streep, Stanley TucciAnd Emily Blunt.
Lauryn in ‘Brokeback Mountain’ (2005)
It can be hard to appreciate or even remember correctly the performances of supporting actors in films where the main actors are so strong that they capture the whole screen and our hearts and minds. That’s how it goes Ang LeeX Brokeback mountain. Heath Ledger And Jake Gyllenhaal there are so many forces in this film that we sometimes forget that there are other people in it. Yet Hathaway’s talent manages to show itself.
As Jack’s (Gyllenhaal) wife, Lurin, Hathaway is both cold and emotional. We hate it and understand it at the same time. She is the perfect enemy, for lack of a better word, for the tragic and painfully real love story of Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar (Ledger).
Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries (2001)
The film that started it all. Based Meg Cabot eponymous novel, Garry MarshallX Princess Diaries was the perfect first film for young Anna, who was just beginning her career in Hollywood. Naive, cheerful, curious, and with eyes full of stars, protagonist Mia Thermopolis seemed perfect for Hathaway, who played her in such a way that character and actress were almost inseparable.
As a young girl who finds out she is the secret heir to the throne of a fictional European kingdom, Anne Hathaway is adorable and ludicrously funny. It was clear from the beginning that she was well suited for comedies. And her chemistry with colleagues Julie Andrews, Heather MatarazzoAnd Hector Elizondo? *kiss the chef*
Fantine in Les Misérables (2012)
Look, let’s get one thing straight: there were a lot of bad casting choices in 2012. Outcasts. And director Tom HooperThe decision to have actors with little to no musical training sing live on set didn’t make life any easier for anyone. Just ask the poor man Russell Crowe. But this does not mean that the film version Les Mis is entirely made up of errors.
Anne Hathaway, for example, is the perfect choice for Fantine, the walking, talking embodiment of all the horrors of poverty in 19th-century France. Her powerful performance was widely acclaimed and earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Her performance of the show-stopper “I Dreamed a Dream” may not be perfect, but that just makes it all the more heartbreaking.
Kim in ‘Rachel Gets Married’ (2008)
While Hathaway received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2013, in 2009 she received only a nod in the Leading Role category for her role in Jonathan DemmeX Rachel is getting married. In this heartbreaking yet strangely funny film about family and substance abuse, Hathaway plays Kim, a young woman returning home for her sister’s wedding after nearly a decade in rehab.
Playing this character is not easy, and a smaller actress could get it all wrong, turning Kim into either a pathetic buffoon or a runaway train wreck. Hathaway, however, manages to strike a sweet spot between the tragic and the comic, making Kim a realistic character that we can all identify with, even at her worst.
Gloria in ‘Colossal’ (2016)
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: one of Anne Hathaway’s greatest roles was in the movie that turned her into a kaiju. In fact, if I may be that bold, this is Hathaway’s best work so far, period. Colossal a film about depression, alcoholism and abuse. It’s also a movie about a giant monster and an equally huge robot fighting over the Korean capital of Seoul. Its outrageous premise - a woman discovering she’s connected to a kaiju that wreaks death and destruction on the other side of the world - is quickly bought by Hathaway, who then sells it to us with equal talent and skill.
Her Gloria is such a sad human character that we can’t help but accept her story as something far from reality, no matter how outlandish it may sound. This view is similar to RachelKim, could easily go wrong in the hands of a less skilled actress. But, as usual, Hathaway finds the perfect balance between tragedy and humor, between the real and the absurd. Colossal this is her film from start to finish, and it could never be anyone else’s.
