Thanks to favorable weather, this year’s harvest will be high, so there will be more vegetables and fruits on the market. However, according to analysts, significant price drops should not be expected, at best they will not be too excessive.
“The gradual decrease in air temperature at the end of 2022 created favorable conditions for entering winter dormancy. Precipitation, sleet and snow from October to February had a positive impact on groundwater resources. This means that there will be more vegetables and fruits on the market, because the frosts did not damage the plantations of fruit bushes.
The season will be postponed
Although the frost has not killed the crops and the weather is, at least for now, quite favorable for farmers, the situation is not ideal. All because of the relatively low temperatures that prevailed in April and early May. As a result, vegetables and fruits grow more slowly, which means that the season for them will come a little later.
This trend is seen in wholesale prices, which are significantly higher than last May, according to Business Insider. This is especially true for strawberries, for which one has to pay PLN 10 more per kilogram than a year ago.
- Growth slows down under cover or in open ground. Nature can catch up, but if it turns out that June-July is hot, then we are likely to expect a short and intense burst of fruit, as has happened in the past with strawberries. At that time, there were few early vegetables, and then prices fell sharply, but not for long. The season has shortened significantly,” Vitold Boguta, president of the board of the National Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers Groups, tells Business Insider.
There will be no price drop.
Although everything seems to indicate that the season will turn out to be successful this year and there will be a lot of vegetables on the market, according to producers, a significant drop in prices should not be expected.
“Consumers are unlikely to expect lower prices than a year ago. At best, they won’t be too extreme, which could happen if we were dealing with drought or severe damage after winter. Recall that in addition to the growth of production costs, logistics and labor costs are becoming more expensive. The Polish market may also be affected by unrest in other EU countries. In Italy or Spain, we are dealing with a water shortage,” Vitold Boguta tells Insider.
