dolls the franchise has been rebooted more times than we can count, but one of the strangest attempts to bring back beloved characters came in the form of an ABC sitcom simply titled Dolls. (the dot is part of the name). The Muppets, of course, are familiar with television, since it was with him that everything began for the legendary puppets with The Muppet Show before making over a dozen films. This does not mean that they have ever completely retired from television, since dolls now It premiered on Disney+ just a few years ago, and the infamous Mayhem Band will also be getting their own series on the streaming service this May. Muppets Mayhem.
However, before the dawn of Disney+, ABC was airing another series starring the Muppets. On paper, the concept of the show sounds like a home run as it is a mockumentary series that essentially functions as Office with dolls. Plus, things only get better when you add the Muppets, as evidenced by Muppet Christmas Carol And muppet treasure island. Fans even wanted Get the knives a film starring puppets, which even received approval Ryan Johnson.
That being said, despite having world-famous characters, an extensive meta-advertising campaign, and prime-time cable television on a major network, Dolls. simply did not resonate with the public and fans, with many citing the show’s unusually mean sense of humor as the reason the show only lasted one season.
What are The Muppets. ABOUT?
Released in 2015, Dolls. sees title puppets in network TV settings. Here’s Kermit the FrogSteve Whitmire) is the executive producer of the popular late-night talk show featuring Miss Piggy (Eric Jacobson), with Fozzie Bear (Jacobson) as her sidekick. Other legendary dolls such as Gonzo the Great (Dave Goltz), Sam Eagle (Jacobson), Scooter (David Rudman), and many more are also part of the show’s cast and crew, as usual. Things get very complicated at the workplace, however, when Kermit and Miss Piggy break up and Kermit starts dating another doll pig named Denise (Julianne Buescher). This shocking drama was conveyed through a clever marketing campaign in which various real-life news outlets reported that the iconic power couple had broken up, implying that the mockumentary series was based on true events.
The love triangle between Kermit, Miss Piggy and Denise is really the only major plot point that runs through the show’s 16 episodes, with much of the series taking an episodic approach and depicting unrelated storylines throughout the season. These stories are also told in the classic mockumentary format, which includes a handheld camera format and occasional moments when the characters are being interviewed. In addition, this dolls series, there are many celebrity performances such as Jay Leno, Lea Thompson, Topher Graceand more.
Why didn’t audiences get into The Muppets?
Generally, Muppets don’t take long to be interesting. That’s because they’re dolls and they’re almost always interesting, even if the movie or show they’re in isn’t all that great (looking at you, Dolls in space). However, the main reason for this is probably that the Muppets’ signature style of humor hasn’t changed much over the years. Dolls. on the other hand, he took some risks with his tone and sense of humor, much to the chagrin of some fans.
In others dolls projects, the iconic characters are mostly harmless and helpful, even if they sneak in from time to time as an adult prank. In the ABC series, the Muppets are clearly more mature. Not to the point where there are F-bombs and other forms of vulgar language, but the Muppets in the workplace do swear a little, which their TV-PG rating allows for. The adult jokes this time around, instead of being few and far between, are now slightly more numerous, such as when Fozzie signs up for a bear dating app only to find out it’s not quite what he expected.
However, perhaps the most significant change Dolls. uses to his advantage, and one of the most significant points of contention is Kermit the Frog as a character. Once again the showrunner of a major television series, this version of Kermit is decidedly tougher than in the past. Kermit constantly berates his staff. Not to the point where he’s offensive, but enough to make you think he’s not very pleasant to work with. It’s a bold move to do this for a character who is so well known for his optimistic attitude and fierce determination to do the right thing for his friends, and, admittedly, it’s not a creative decision that pays off.
Ultimately, the main reason for cancellation Dolls. there were poor ratings, and this is likely because the show’s more adult tone alienated the franchise’s main younger audience. Not even because the show was aimed at adults, as the humor is far from obscene or offensive. However, the workplace environment of an office isn’t as exciting as hunting for pirate treasure or staging a musical on Broadway, so kids will likely prefer to see dolls go on these adventures rather than deal with workplace conflicts.
Although the Muppets. Clear failure, is that bad?
Oh, far from it. Despite everything we have listed about why the show failed, Dolls. it’s a hysterical take on beloved characters, and the positive critical reviews have proven it. While avowed issues such as Kermit’s meanness and unattractiveness to younger audiences remain, the show’s sense of humor is still solid and consistently elicits laughter. For starters, the Muppets’ positions on the show seem comically perfect. Kermit as Producer, Miss Piggy as Night Host, Fozzie as Assistant, Gonzo as Screenwriter, Scooter as Director, and perhaps best of all Sam Eagle as Censor. Only this last one is comedy gold.
Also, while the tone of the show is admittedly not for everyone, it’s really fun to see the Muppets acting a little grown-up this time around. Part of it is shocking when they say “shit” or “hell,” but there’s also something funny about these cartoon characters taking on mundane tasks like office politics. The case of The Muppets is quite similar to that of the cult favorite. The Looney Tunes Showboth are television programs that place iconic child characters in the closest we’ve ever seen to the real world.
