On Saturday, July 8, Ukrainian champion Shakhtar Donetsk played the first test match in preparation for the start of the new season.
The Pitmen’s opponent, who held the first match under the leadership of the Dutchman Patrick van Leeuwen, was the two-time champion of the Netherlands - AZ from Alkmaar. The teams only once crossed paths in European competitions, and then Alkmaarers knocked out the Donetsk team from the 1/8 finals of the Europa League-2004/2005.
This time, AZ players took the lead three times during the match, but each time the Pitmen, who played in the experimental line-up, found the strength to recoup — Oleksandr Zubkov, Valeriy Bondar and Kevin Kelsey scored. As a result, the resultant draw is 3:3.
