Due to the catastrophic losses of the Russian troops near Ugledar, the commander of the Eastern Military District of the Russian Army, Colonel General Rustam Muradov, was repeatedly criticized. According to rumors, the Russian military leadership fired him. These as yet unconfirmed rumors are reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), citing several Russian military bloggers.
Muradov was appointed commander of the Eastern Military District on October 6, 2022, before that he was deputy commander of the Southern Military District. Over the past five months, the general has spearheaded a series of disastrous offensive deals in the Donetsk region, ISW reports. Muradov is also considered responsible for the huge losses that Russia suffered in its attempt to seize Vuhledar in the Donbass.
Despite these losses and the failure of the Russians in the Ugledar region, on February 20, Putin nevertheless awarded Muradov the rank of supreme general.
Muradov’s dismissal could now be an admission of Russia’s lack of success. In addition to Muradov, they say that the commander of the Western Military District Yevgeny Nikiforov has also been fired. However, there is no official confirmation of these rumors yet.
Earlier it was reported that the disgraced general was promoted in Russia.
