How did the Poles perceive electric vehicles in the past and how is it now? Commissioned by Volkswagen, the InsightOut lab re-asked Polish drivers several questions from the 2020-2022 surveys to find out if and how their knowledge and opinions on various issues related to electromobility have changed.
InsightOut Lab and Volkswagen have been implementing a project for three years now, the aim of which is to train Polish drivers in the field of electric vehicles. On March 28, 2023, an extensive report was published summarizing the most important findings from the last twelve months of research. It shows that the level of knowledge of respondents about electric vehicles and related issues is gradually increasing. Respondents consider the development of charging infrastructure to be one of the most important issues.
Knowledge and awareness of Poles is growing
We attach increasing importance to private charging infrastructure in real estate. We are also more familiar with the range of electric vehicles, and our expectations for the number of kilometers that can be driven are growing. However, this does not mean that knowledge about electromobility is already widespread.
From almost half (48 percent) in the 2020 survey to 63 percent in 2023, the proportion of Poles who agree that having a parking space or a garage with an electric vehicle charging point increases the attractiveness of the property they buy. rose. The percentage of Poles who know that commercially available electric vehicles can travel up to 400-500 km on a single charge has more than doubled, from 6 percent in 2020 to 13 percent in 2023. In 2023, two out of five respondents expected an electric vehicle to have a range of at least 400 km. Even in 2020, every fourth respondent had such requirements.
Electricians are not hybrids
Among the people who say they have ever driven an electric vehicle as a driver, one in two has had the opportunity to drive an all-electric car (this is due to the confusion between electric and hybrid cars). This is 15 percentage points more than in 2020, when every third respondent (35%) had such an experience. Interestingly, in the latest study, only every seventh respondent (14 percent) was able to correctly indicate the number of all-electric cars registered in Poland (between 25,000 and 100,000). When the same question was asked in January 2022, almost one in three drivers (31 percent) answered it correctly.
Electricity as a company car: we are for “yes”
What other conclusions can be drawn from the studies conducted in 2022? Respondents are of the opinion that new cars are expensive, this opinion applies equally to cars with an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. Why did the Polish driver decide to buy an electric car? Mainly due to high fuel prices. Nearly half (47 percent) of those surveyed would like their company vehicles to run on electricity.
