Brussels hosted an international conference of donor countries who decided to help Turkey and Syria in the aftermath of a series of deadly devastating earthquakes. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the result of the meeting exceeded the wildest expectations. Its participants raised 7 billion euros to help victims of the February natural disaster.

I am very pleased to see today that the international community strongly supports the reconstruction efforts in Turkey and Syria.‘, von der Leyen said at a joint press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, whose country holds the EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2023.

The head of the European Commission cited sad statistics - the earthquakes that occurred in early February claimed the lives of about 50 thousand people in the two countries, becoming the deadliest natural disaster in the history of the region.

Millions of people have been left homeless and living in tents as the winter continues. We need to mobilize recovery efforts. Homes, schools and hospitals must be rebuilt to the highest seismic safety standards. Water supply, sanitation and other critical infrastructure must be repaired. Government services and businesses need capital to reopen”, - with these words, von der Leyen described what the collected billions will go to.

Compared to the amount of damage, this amount does not seem so huge. Only in Turkey the damage from earthquakes exceeds $100 billion (about 97 billion euros).

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the conference participants via video link.

No country is capable of dealing with a crisis of this magnitude on its own. We will never forget the solidarity that all our friends have shown during these difficult days.”he thanked.

About 400 representatives of the countries of the world, regional organizations and non-governmental groups attended the conference in Brussels. The Syrian and Russian authorities were not invited.

Recall that in Turkey, the number of people accused of mass deaths during earthquakes is growing rapidly.
