The end of the work of programmers is nearing. The expert has no doubt

Must read

This news has affected not only employees of the IT industry. For several days, this was also one of the main topics in many Polish companies. Workers do not hide their concerns about future employment.

Last week, the IBM CEO said he intends to stop recruiting for positions that can be filled by artificial intelligence. In his opinion, almost a third of positions that are not related to customer service, that is, 7.8 thousand employees will be replaced in the next few years. Many Polish entrepreneurs and business owners, including those in the high-tech sector, speak in a similar tone.

Machines will replace workers. They save time and money

- The programming profession is coming to an end. Artificial intelligence can force many specialists out of the labor market - said Cezary Kazmierczak, President of the Association of Entrepreneurs and Employers, in an interview with Wprost.pl. The entrepreneur saw how AI creates software for various organizations. The machine did it almost perfectly and very quickly. Such a task would have to be performed by a team of very good specialists in a much longer time. Companies saved time and money.

- One of the most popular professions today may soon become one of the most forgotten. Coders will have to retrain. We should not ask “if”, but “when” Al will replace the programmers. expert added.

In his opinion, specialists who write simple scripts will lose their jobs first. After that, they will have to look for work. “code slaps” who still earned a lot of money for their skills and changed jobs every six months as soon as they received a higher salary.

Those who adapt to work with artificial intelligence will win

- The winners in the market will not be the smartest programmers, but those people who can adapt to the new situation and see artificial intelligence as an opportunity, not a threat. says President Kazmierczak. The expert notes that there are already many companies on the market that offer various types of plug-ins to make artificial intelligence work better and be even more efficient.

- A new market is emerging offering AI support. There are people who not only offer new services, but also claim to be experts in the field of artificial intelligence. he notes.

The IT industry is divided. Some see the threat, others talk about the future

The very question of the future of artificial intelligence in the labor market divides entrepreneurs or owners of IT companies. Many experts have no doubts about the huge changes, both social and economic, as well as closely related to the employment of employees, that artificial intelligence will bring. In their opinion, there will be fewer job offers in this profession.

One of the co-owners of a large IT company says bluntly that this solution will not only revolutionize the labor market, but also solve the problem of a shortage of specialists that the industry has been struggling with for years. - Not yet, but in two or three years several hundred employees will lose their jobs. For every three programmers, I have to fire two and retrain the third to work with Al. - claims.

Al will change almost every field. The labor market will undergo major changes

In turn, Kledar has been closely associated with the development of artificial intelligence since its foundation. She collaborated with on large computing projects for the Large Hadron Collider, where she pioneered the use of artificial intelligence techniques on a large scale to search for new elementary particles and study the structure of tiny protons. Its representatives expect many profound changes with the advent of artificial intelligence.

- One area that will undergo major changes will certainly be the labor market. AI helps in automation so effectively and adequately that there may be a risk that people doing simpler, less complex and repetitive work will either have to specialize more or lose their job. However, the trend, especially in IT, should work in favor of the first assumption. says Tomasz Bogdal, solution architect at Cledar.

New problems and new professions will appear

- Of course, there will be new challenges, new questions that will require new types of employees and experts. Copilot is already making things easier for many developers on tasks that used to take a lot of time. AI will generate the text in a second, and the task of the author is to check if it is well written, and in this saved time, he can focus on solving more real problems he adds.

In his opinion, the IT market is likely to change in other ways as well. - New professions will be created, and old ones will cease to function. He argues that there will be AI programmers who specialize in natural language, not programming languages. According to Tomasz Bogdal, it is also possible that Al will remain only an instrument for a long time. “History knows such revolutions, and in the end they were the engine of development - claims.

The company is currently using artificial intelligence for everyday meetings. - We don’t have to focus on taking notes and then reading and summarizing, but we can focus on the merits. Thanks to AI, we were able to eliminate such time-consuming activities. he points.

Not everyone sees a threat to the work of programmers. AI could be an opportunity for them

Maciej Cielecki, CEO of 10Clouds, has a different opinion. - At the current stage of development, and also in the future of several months, we should not expect a scenario in which AI will do all the work for us or minimize or even marginalize the role of the programmer. - speaks.

- On the contrary, tools such as ChatGPT or Copilot, which are most often used in code development work, dramatically increase the efficiency of programmers, if only we know how to use them. He says.

- GenAI tools will gradually improve, but for at least the next year (although it’s hard to talk about a specific time horizon here, because it changes quickly), I don’t see a threat to the work of programmers, and for people who do not want to learn this or adapt to new way of working - adds Maciej Celecki.

There is a solution. We must adapt to the new reality

In his opinion, working in this industry has always been about constantly developing skills, updating knowledge and learning new tools, new libraries or language versions. - Those who did not, their value in the market fell, they fell out of circulation and could not count on the best offers from employers. Thus, learning GenAI tools is a natural step in developing competence. - claims.

- In my opinion, from the point of view of a person using tools such as GenAI, the job of a programmer is the safest. People who perform simple tasks, where the end result should not be of high quality, creativity or artistic value, can be frightened. There, AI will quickly find its use. This will work well when creating less complex text content or graphics. he points.

Experts agree on one thing. Artificial intelligence is certainly an achievement that is changing and will change our lives. Its further development will mean greater use of AI in the field of programming as well. First, to perform relatively simple tasks, i.e. to create simpler codes.

It will be like an industrial revolution. Some professions have disappeared, others have appeared

This can be compared to the translation of texts. Today, such tasks can be performed by a machine, it does not have to be done by a person. So it will be with the creation of codes. The problem of artificial intelligence is its cliché. We don’t know if we’ll ever get out of this. Thus, it seems that the problems associated with real creation are the prerogative of man. So a wizard programmer, someone who comes up with new concepts, will always be valuable.

According to economist Marek Zuber, artificial intelligence will relatively quickly replace humans in simpler tasks, including programmers. - First, the use of artificial intelligence will support, not reduce jobs. In the long term, but really long term, this could become competition for people. he adds.

- I wouldn’t worry too much about it. After all, during the industrial revolution of the late 18th and 19th centuries, theses were also put forward about the drama of replacing man with machines, about the taking of labor. Some professions have disappeared, but others have appeared he points out.
