After 15 years, Samuel L. Jackson gets his turn as a protagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe project. The man who brought the Avengers together is branching out himself for the upcoming Secret Invasionin which Fury returns from outer space to stop the escalation of a war for Earth between humanity and a radical group of disgruntled Skrull refugees.
The last time we saw Fury on screen, he and the Skrulls seemed to be in perfect harmony. Sting after credits Spider-Man: Far From Home showed that Rage, which worked with Tom HollandPeter Parker was actually Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) in disguise all the time. The real Fury was somewhere in deep space aboard the Skull ship, sitting with his legs held high and sipping a cocktail on a virtual-generated beach before getting back to business.
Unfortunately for Fury, by then Secret Invasion turns over, his apathetic approach to getting them home led the rebel faction of the Skrulls to decide to take matters into their own hands. Under the direction of Kingsley Ben AdirGravik, they are camped in the radioactive wastelands deep in Russia, planning to seize control of the planet they are already on rather than waiting for a new world, and they intend to use their incredible shape-shifting abilities as well as force to claim their new house.
All of this is taking its toll on Fury, as Jackson explains to Empire magazine. He’s lost his eye patch, his goatee has grown, and he’s a life-weary man who needs help wherever he can find it. Jackson has been waiting a long time for a chance to lead the Marvel project, which has relished the opportunity to reveal Fury’s backstory - though he hopes he’ll be here for much longer too.
What’s going on with Nick Fury?
“Here you have a guy who shows his face and shows his age. This is an opportunity to humanize someone who everyone considers superhuman. He is trying to solve the problem without people with superpowers, and there is a very good explanation for this. I’ll come.
We also fill in gaps in Fury’s life that we don’t know. We meet people he knew when he was alone, before the Avengers or anyone else came along. I needed to figure out some things and develop some new things which I have been trying to do for a while. It’s great to be able to find out who he was and to get into how much his work actually affects his personal life.
I love playing him and I love the fact that they open him up to all these other possibilities and all this life that he has. So hopefully I’m not done yet and in this new phase of the MCU I’ll still be floating back and forth in some way.”
Secret Invasion it is currently scheduled to premiere on June 21 on Disney+ and will include six episodes. Check out the trailer for the upcoming series below:
