The AI-powered ChatGPT tool is extremely popular, but it knows a lot about us. If you’ve said too much in a conversation with a chatbot, feel uncomfortable, or just want to take care of your privacy, this guide is for you.
ChatGPT is currently the world’s most popular AI-enabled chatbot. For months now, internet users all over the world have been raving about talking to the machine and what it can do for us. However, nothing is free. In order to provide the service and develop its features, ChatGPT collects our data. How can we remove them?
What data does ChatGPT collect?
The creators of ChatGPT from OpenAI disclose in the official documentation what data they collect as part of the chatbot service. The list contained in the privacy policy is quite long.
The company primarily collects our data when setting up an account, which is required to interact with ChatGPT. Secondly, information about us is collected every time we interact with an AI-powered assistant.
When we set up a profile, OpenAI remembers the given name, login and password, as well as contact information. In addition, our payment information added to your account by credit cards and other payment methods is retained. They are going for a premium subscription to the ChatGPT service, which is not used by everyone.
When interacting with the tool, each of our chat entries is saved. It is this fact that allows AI to remember the context and return to previous requests, for example, to expand them. However, it is worth remembering this and, just in case, not to reveal compromising details of our life to the machine. The tool also tracks various usage statistics, including how often we use ChatGPT.
Another type of data collected is the so-called user-generated content. AI remembers, for example, every file that we send to it. If we tell him to correct his essay, the AI will have access to our document. Reviews are also in this category, i.e. performance evaluations of ChatGPT.
Interestingly, OpenAI may also collect additional social data about us if we participate in discussions or like company posts on one of the popular websites such as Twitter or Facebook.
How to remove personal data from AI ChatGPT?
If we don’t want our conversations to be used for AI training, we’re bored with ChatGPT, or we just care who we share data with, we can remove our conversations from the database or delete our data.
Since the end of April, OpenAI has been providing users with a new privacy option that prevents the system from using our chat entries to answer questions from other users.
To change it, just go to our profile by clicking on the marker in the lower left corner of the page. Then go to the Options tab and then Data Management. After that, just turn off chat history and learning.
Of course, like any other OpenAI company, it must also comply with the GDPR and other privacy regulations. As a standard, we have the ability to view the collected data, change it and delete the information collected about us.
Most requests can be sent to [email protected]. OpenAI has also prepared a special form - OpenAI Personal Data Removal Request - available on the official website. Self-help with privacy policy issues is also provided by email at [email protected].
