The cardiologist got up from the couch and set an example for his patients: “I invite you for a walk!” The results surprised everyone

Must read

He walks 7500 steps every day and challenges his patients. The cardiologist decided that it was not lectures and conversations that were effective, but setting an example. Thus, the #cardi challenge was born.

This is a joint action of doctors and patients. And the idea is simple: you need to take 7,500 steps every day. It all started when one of the doctors wondered how to stop the growing problem of the deteriorating health of the Poles. This is how the #cardiac challenge was created, a joint action of cardiologists, electrophysiologists from the heart rhythm section of the Polish Society of Cardiology, specialists from the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice and members of the ICDebrillators patient association.

Cardiologist: “We must lead by example”

- As clinicians, over the past few years, we have seen that patients come to cardiology clinics throughout Poland with various symptoms related to the cardiovascular system, as well as increasingly being overweight or obese. The scale of the problem is increasing. The problem has been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many of us have drastically reduced our former physical activity, says prof. Oskar Kowalski, Head of the Electrophysiology and Cardiac Modeling Laboratory at the Silesian Heart Center in Zabrze, Vice Chancellor of the Medical University of Silesia and creator of the #cardiac challenge. As the specialist emphasizes, the lack of exercise has affected the health of society. - Previously healthy people began to complain of new ailments, and patients with diagnosed cardiological diseases had exacerbations of diseases and deterioration in well-being. We decided to act. However, we asked ourselves the question: will cardiological lectures and conversations give the expected effect? How to motivate our patients to be more active every day? Then eureka!: we ourselves must set the right example! - explains prof. Kowalski.

The challenge was thrown by Carolina Courages, President of the ICDebrillators Association. The Doctor uploads photos from his daily walks to his Facebook profile and tags Caroline the Brave on them. She does not remain in debt and boasts of her successes. It quickly became clear that after their fight, the fans not only support and like, but also begin to share their achievements. As prof. Kowalski, they themselves get up from the couch and walk 7.5 thousand steps, showing off photos, videos, showing reports from pedometers or photos of maps with the route traveled.

7.5 thousand steps per day. It’s enough?

prof. Oscar Kowalski set 7.5 thousand steps as an indicator of an unusual call. As he emphasizes, it is contractual value that should motivate regular movement. Will you walk less a day, but will you also ride a bike? Will you dance, go to the gym? Everything is fine! However, always consider your health and the current capabilities of your body. Are you on holiday for some reason? All right, now get back to the challenge as soon as possible! - speaks.

Carolina Brave herself faced a situation where, due to an infection, she had to postpone a call for a while. But now she’s back on the footpaths. - Excuses like: I don’t have time? I do not accept! Just decide which is more important. I get up at 6:00 and hit the road before work. Was it easy at first? No, but now I love my morning, time for myself. How much energy I have after that! The main thing is that I see changes in my appearance, I feel better and better in my body. Well-being? To the medal! The same applies to our other “Chelendians,” says Karolina Kurazhes.

As prof. Kowalski, a change in lifestyle often causes revolutionary changes in the condition and well-being of patients. - We often observed in the clinic when our patient, for example, six months ago, when he still smoked, ate malnourished and was not physically active, after a few months he returned to us in a state where there were simply no indications for treatment. procedure! The symptoms of arrhythmia disappeared, the procedure was no longer necessary. Of course, we are not able to prevent all diseases, but I can say with full responsibility that a healthy lifestyle is an effective prevention of many diseases and an excellent support in cardiotherapy. This is the best path to a better, healthier and happier life - for both patients and healthy people. I invite you for a walk! the doctor concludes.
