  • Criminal liability

Sundays were separated into commercial and non-commercial Sundays in 2018. Since then, the law governing the ban on trading on this day has been constantly modified. Some exceptions have also been introduced in recent years. As a result, shops are open seven Sundays a year in the same way as on weekdays. Usually these dates precede important holidays or a period of longer holidays.

When are Sunday auctions?

We are already behind three of the seven trading Sundays. One happened in January, and the other two happened at the beginning and end of April. Sunday falling on May 14th is not included. On this day, all shopping centers and large stores will be closed. The next opportunity to shop on Sunday will only be June 25th. The following are scheduled for:

  • August 27;

  • December 17;

  • December 24th.

Where will we shop on May 14th?

May 14 is non-commercial Sunday. However, this does not mean that shopping on this day is impossible. The law contains a list of shops that are allowed to trade on that day. In total, there are 32 objects that are not limited in terms of accessibility. These include:

  • gas stations;

  • ice cream shops;

  • pharmacies;

  • confectionery and bakeries;

  • kiosks;

  • shops operating at railway stations and airports.

Smaller local shops may also be open on Sundays. However, for this, the owner of the outlet must stand behind the counter. The same principle applies to franchise stores. That is why some Żabka and Carrefour Express stores are open every Sunday. However, on this day they work at different times than on weekdays.

Criminal liability

Violation of the ban on trading on Sundays and public holidays may result in legal consequences. Failure to comply with the rules is punishable by a fine of PLN 1,000 to PLN 100,000. If the owner continues to break the rules, he could face jail time.
