The former head of the Party of Regions faction in the Verkhovna Rada, ex-deputy Alexander Efremov, accused in Ukraine of high treason, fled to Moscow. There, his family owns luxury apartments worth $4 million. Schemes reported this.
Efremov was released from custody in 2019 after three years in the Starobelsk pre-trial detention center (Lugansk region). At first he was released under house arrest, and then the measure of restraint was changed to personal obligation for two months, which was not extended after that.
One of Efremov’s lawyers in the case was Andrey Smirnov, now deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine. At the OPU, Smirnov oversees the judicial branch of government, which has been in need of reform for many years.
In response to a request from Schemes, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine reported that Efremov does not have a preventive measure and has not been put on the wanted list. No court hearings have been scheduled in the case. “which is probably due to the temporary occupation of Starobelsk.” The prosecutor’s office mentioned that the cases of the Starobelsky court should now be considered by the Sinelnikovsky city district court of the Dnepropetrovsk region. The UCP reported that information about the actual transfer of materials from Efremov’s case to another court named after “didn’t arrive”.
Earlier it was reported that the Shevchenkovsky District Court of Kyiv found former SBU Major General Valery Shaitanov guilty of high treason, attempted terrorist attack and storage of ammunition. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
