A new mutation of the coronavirus called Eris is already in 50 countries. According to Wprost, virologist prof. Włodzimierz Gut will probably appear in Poland in autumn. “It can be such an unnecessary holiday souvenir,” he adds.
It is difficult to estimate exactly how quickly Eris, a new sub-variant of EG.5.1, will spread and when it will reach Poland. There are many indications that this is fast. Infections have already been identified in dozens of countries, and the number of confirmed cases has doubled in recent weeks. These also include Italy, which is one of the favorite holiday destinations for Poles.
We know from experience that the spread of the coronavirus is facilitated by the movement of people, which often occurs during the holidays. Therefore, in September we can expect diseases in our country. In addition, almost no one uses masks anymore, and only they protect against the spread of diseases. In Poland, the data says only 1 percent. society wears masks, says prof. Vladimir Gut.
What are the symptoms of infection and who is at risk for severe infection?
According to prof. Guta, there is no indication that infection with a new variant of the coronavirus will have a dangerous course. Most of the population has been vaccinated or already exposed to the coronavirus, has recovered from COVID-19, and is immune. Immunocompromised people with comorbidities are at risk for a severe course. The symptoms of an infection caused by the new mutation are similar to those of Omicron. The most common symptoms of Eris variant infection are mainly upper respiratory tract symptoms. These include dry cough, watery nasal discharge and nasal congestion, hoarseness, headache, muscle pain, and sometimes impaired sense of smell. However, there is no fever. The virologist sensitizes:
It is important to remember that a person infected with the coronavirus infects others before they develop symptoms of the disease. Therefore, it is important to stay at home or wear a mask when in contact with people if you are not feeling well.
Is it possible to prepare for the arrival of a new variant of the coronavirus?
According to the virologist, new variants of the coronavirus will appear, and we must be prepared for this. To minimize the risk of infection, you should observe hygiene (wash hands, wear masks), avoid large crowds. You also need to take care of the general condition of the body, proper nutrition, rest and sports in the fresh air. It is known that an updated version of the vaccine against the HBB1.5 subvariant, which is one of the dominant ones, is still under development. However, there are concerns that the new mutation may be resistant to vaccination. The World Health Organization (WHO) considered it “an option under observation”. Professor Gut recalls:
Remember that vaccinations do not protect against infection, but only against a severe course of the disease.
