A new surgical method for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis has been applied in Poland. Patients who have undergone the procedure feel very well.
Doctors from the Department of Vascular Surgery and Angiology of Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Lublin were the first to perform an innovative operation. Every year, tens of thousands of new cases of deep vein thrombosis are diagnosed in Poland. Poorly treated thrombosis is serious risk to the health and life of the patient – The clots released can therefore cause blockage.
In the case of deep vein thrombosis, conservative treatment is most often used - pharmacological anticoagulants, and in more severe conditions - decongestant methods. The methods used so far are more invasive than those recently proposed by vascular surgeons from the Independent Public Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Lublin.
The procedure took place at the end of February, and its consequences became known in mid-March.
“This was the first operation in Poland for advanced deep vein thrombosis using new methods, much less invasive than before. This treatment method was proposed and implemented in our hospital by Dr. n.m.s. Jan Jakub Kensik together with a team of excellent specialists from the Department of Vascular Surgery and Angiology SPSK 1,” says Anna Guzowska, spokeswoman for the clinic in Lublin.
What is the innovation of this method of unblocking the veins?
The new method provides faster recovery. This is possible thanks to the use of modern medical equipment - the Penumbra intelligent suction unit with a suction catheter. Thanks to this device, during the operation, clots can be distinguished from blood - the system recognizes the thrombus and eliminates the blockage in the veins. As a result, the patient loses less blood.
In addition, people who could not be operated on earlier due to the high risk of bleeding are pinning hope on the system. For this reason, they were sentenced to pharmacological treatment. It will now be safer to remove the clot. The only condition is that the duration of the operation should not exceed 14 days from the onset of symptoms of thrombosis. And this, for example, is swelling of the arm or leg, pain in the part of the limb, its warming and redness, fever, increased heart rate.
Deep vein thrombosis - what is it?
Deep vein thrombosis is a serious condition that should not be underestimated. It occurs when blood clots form, usually in the deep veins of the legs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that 10-30% of people who develop thrombosis in the leg have complications, even death - and within a month after diagnosis.
Women are more likely to suffer from thrombosis. Risk factors include:
-
passive lifestyle,
-
hormonal treatment,
-
immobilization,
-
major operations (eg, orthopedic, gynecological, cardiac surgery).
