On Friday, May 26, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić gave the order to put the army of the republic on full alert. Relocation is underway. Its goal is to move army units as close as possible to the border with Kosovo.
Serbian Defense Minister Milos Vučević confirmed that the President had given just such a decree.
The decision was caused by a new sharp aggravation in the north of Kosovo. There, small groups of ethnic Serbs clashed with police. They tried to block the entrances to municipal buildings to prevent newly elected officials from entering them. The police used tear gas. The Serbs set fire to several cars.
On Thursday, May 25, new heads of local self-government took the oath in northern Kosovo. They are all Kosovo Albanians. Serbs are protesting against this. The Kosovo authorities sent columns of police armored vehicles there.
The conflict between Serbia and Kosovo escalated in July 2022, when Pristina decided to introduce temporary documents for citizens of Serbia entering the territory of the republic and demanded that the Serbian minority change their old license plates to local ones. Kosovo Serbs erected barricades in protest. The clashes continued until December 2022.
In mid-December, Kosovo officially applied for EU membership. Serbia did this back in 2009, but there is still no decision on it. Brussels, according to Western newspapers, let Belgrade and Pristina understand that everything depends on a successful settlement of the conflict.
Earlier, analysts explained why Russia is trying to inflate the conflict in the Balkans and how it is beneficial to Putin.
