Outlander - one of the best historical dramas, but sometimes there is a thin line between truth and fiction. Some characters were not created Diana Gabaldon. She mentioned several real historical figures in her story, and fans have seen many of them on the popular Starz show.
Through Outlandermany seasons, Claire (Katrina Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) became world travelers, traveling through Scotland, the Highlands, Paris, Jamaica and the New World, especially North Carolina. During their travels, they encountered the preparation of some of the most famous rebellions and related wars. Along the way, the couple encountered many real historical figures who led these uprisings.
12 King Louis XV
OutlanderX King Louis XV (Lionel Lingelser) is the same villain as the historical figure. He quickly reveals that he is a monster when he demands that Claire sleep with him in exchange for Jamie’s freedom from Bastille. The moment is frightening and is a prime example of his selfish actions.
He continues to abuse his royal power by forcing Claire to choose who should die, the Comte St. Germain or Master Raymond. The real King Louis XV wasn’t that great either. His decisions were not always the best, and they cost France dearly afterwards.
eleven Quartermaster John O’Sullivan
Bonnie Prince Charlie listens to Quartermaster John O’Sullivan (Gerard Horan) instead of seasoned Highlander warriors during the planning for the Battle of Culloden. Things could have turned out differently if the exiled prince had listened to his fighters, and not to the quartermaster.
According to the DIB, many questioned O’Sullivan’s military judgment. He made some pretty bad decisions about the Battle of Culloden, including the site of the battle, which was favorable to the British. This was not his only mistake as a quartermaster. O’Sullivan lost his soldiers’ rations and his cannon ammunition.
10 Joseph Duverny
IN Outlander In Season 2, Jamie occasionally plays chess with Louis XV’s finance minister, Monsieur Joseph Duverny (Mark Dure). According to Britannica, the real Duverny was an incredibly successful French financier. Maybe that’s why OutlanderDuverny is competitive.
Duverny may have been a powerful man in Louis’s court, but he does not play an important role in Outlander. But it normal. Not every historical figure needs to play a part in the show’s story. Sometimes it’s nice when they don’t have a goal. Their cameos are like Easter eggs for history buffs.
9 Hildegard’s mother
Immediately upon their arrival in France, Claire and Jamie find themselves in a dangerous court situation. However, the meeting with mother Hildegard (Francis de la Tour), a nun who runs a charity hospital, assures them that not everyone in Paris is vicious snakes. The nun is comforting compared to the French aristocracy.
According to Britannica, the warm and caring woman is based on a real saint. Saint Hildegard, or Hildegard of Bingen, was a 12th-century nun who supposedly had visions. Like the historical figure, Mother Hildegard has a deep love for music.
8 Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat
Simon Fraser (ur.Clive Russell), “Old Fox” - Jamie’s paternal grandfather. He is one of the leaders of the clan that Jamie and Claire are trying to win over to Handsome Prince Charlie’s side. However, Simon only does what is best for him. To get out of the fight, he feigns illness and sends fewer soldiers than promised. Simon is eventually beheaded as a traitor.
The real Simon Fraser was an even bigger liar. ClaireandJamie.com writes that Simon participated in two Jacobite risings. He was pardoned after the first and played for both sides during the second. In the end, he wanted to keep his lands and titles, but was caught and convicted of treason. He was the last person to be executed by beheading in the Tower of London.
7 Simon Fraser, Master of Lovat
IN OutlanderSimon Fraser (ur.James Parris), Lovat’s master, Lord Lovat, Old Fox’s son and Jamie’s less brave uncle. Unlike his father, who played both sides for his own benefit, Simon prefers to stay out of the conflict altogether. He does not join the fight to restore the Scottish throne.
Unlike his Outlander However, according to the Fraser clan, Simon did take part in the Jacobite rising of 1745. However, in 1750 he was pardoned. This did not stop him from being a soldier. Simon also fought in the Seven Years’ War.
6 George and Martha Washington
George and Martha WashingtonSimon Harrison And Elizabeth Appleby) need a little introduction and what they did during the American Revolution. IN Outlander, the couple appears in Season 4 Episode 8 “Wilmington”. The Frasers meet them at a meeting and Claire is smitten. She tells Jamie that they will become very famous and can’t help her joke with George about cutting down the cherry tree.
Jamie doesn’t know it yet, but the Washingtons will play an important role in winning the war against the British. General Washington fights many battles and finally wins the war at Yorktown. He then serves as the first American president from 1789 to 1797.
5 Count Saint Germain
Apart from King Louis XV, Count of Saint-Germain (Stanley Weber) is another villain that Claire and Jamie meet in France. He is a French nobleman who is interested in some mysterious and dangerous things. Saint-Germain is terrible for this couple, but viewers learn little about the risqué character.
However, even less is known about the real Saint-Germain. According to Britannica, the nobleman’s life before his arrest as a Jacobite spy in 1748 is a mystery. He eventually learned alchemy during his travels and became a close confidant of King Louis XV.
4 Bonnie Prince Charlie
Bonnie Prince Charlie is one of the most memorable historical figures in Outlander. His name is mentioned many times early in the series as Dougal raises money for the Jacobite cause. Fans finally meet him in Season 2 when Claire and Jamie visit France.
OutlanderBonnie Prince CharlieAndrew Gower) is close to its real counterpart. Charles Stewart was not an intelligent thinker or military genius. He chose to trust the wrong people, and as a result, his rebellion failed. But the prince was charming.
3 Louise de la Tour d’Auvergne
Louise de la Tour d’AuvergneClaire Sermonne) is an interesting character. She and her husband Jules de Rohan befriend Claire and Jamie when they first arrive in France. Louise has an affair with Bonnie Prince Charles that everyone at court knows about. Viewers don’t often get to see her compassionate side, but after Claire’s miscarriage, it shows up.
Louise and Jules were real people, and Louise had an affair with Bonnie Prince Charles even though they were cousins (according to A History of the Royal Women). Then it was commonplace. Most of the characters in Outlander are also distantly related.
2 Governor William Tryon
Beginning in season 4, Claire and Jamie embark on a journey through colonial America and eventually call the New World home. However, Fraser’s Ridge is only their home thanks to the formidable governor of the North Carolina colony, Governor William Tryon (Tim Downey). He is especially brutal in his hunt for colonial rebels, and Jamie often finds himself at the center of the action.
OutlanderGovernor Tryon resembles his real-life counterpart, although he was also Governor of New York from 1771 to 1777. According to Intelligence.gov, the governor commanded his subjects with particular brutality. An investigation by the Committee to Detect and Suppress Conspiracies also found that he was mischievous and often recruited spies.
1 Jamie Fraser
Diana Gabaldon created Jamie based on two real highland warriors. IN OutlanderJamie is, of course, a highlander warrior from the Fraser clan. He fights at the Battle of Culloden and manages to survive.
Gabaldon created Jamie based on the real soldier Fraser from Master Lovat’s regiment, who survived the Battle of Culloden (according to Dipp). She read about a man in Eric Linklaterbook, prince in heather. The author also based Jamie on a real highlander criminal nicknamed Dunbonnet. Legend has it that he hid from the English in a cave for seven months after Culloden: his real name was James Fraser of Foyers.
