It’s been four years since we had the opportunity to witness an incredibly ambitious action adventure. Alita: Battle Angel. The film had the makings of a franchise, and yet… there was no official announcement or tangible movement about it. Alita 2 since then. Even though actors and creatives have supported the campaign for a sequel for years. During the press tour for his new film Hypnoticdirector Robert Rodriguez turned to the future Battle Angel and what has happened to the eventual franchise over the past few years.

In an interview with Collider Steve WeintraubRodriguez has made it clear that he’s just as excited as everyone else. Alita to have a future, but one thing has seriously affected the development of any sequels: Fox’s acquisition by Disney in 2019. However, the director is hopeful as projects seem to be finally moving forward at 20th Century Studios, rebranded as 20th Century. So is there any movement now to get Alita 2 from the earth? “I mean, a movement other than us talking about it? You know, I just wasn’t sure it would ever happen, because even when the first movie came out, Disney had just bought Fox, so even our marketers, everyone, had gone by the time this movie came out. And then there weren’t any Fox movies that were made for years because Disney was still busy making their own Disney products. But now I’ve seen a few Fox movies, so that gave me hope. And then when John [Landau, producer] mentioned it and then [James Cameron] and I said that we always wanted to do a sequel to Alita. He sketched out the second and third films in great detail, so the material is already there. So yes, we hope it happens. But nothing more certain than that.”

Concerning James Cameronwe all know that the director will be busy for almost a decade working on the next three parts Avatar. He co-wrote the screenplay for Alita: Battle Angelbut even though he may not have time to sit down and write a sequel, his outline mentioned by Rodriguez can certainly serve as a starting point.

Based on the manga of the same name.
