Ever since I first saw Holly Bailey in a brief overview Mermaid At D23, fans have been eagerly awaiting their chance to travel “under the water” and rediscover the world and characters first introduced in the 1989 Disney film. Now, according to the movie listing on the AMC website, it looks like we’re in for an extended stay at Ariel and Eric’s house (Jonah Hauer-King) Kingdoms, the film will reportedly be 2 hours and 15 minutes long.

Record running time

Given that the animated film is 84 minutes long, it is obvious that Rob Marshall-the directed live-action remake will expand the world and tell viewers about the first experience over three decades ago, and the 135-minute runtime breaks records for the longest Disney live-action remakes. This is hardly a new concept for viewers, as live-action remakes tend to increase their runtime compared to their animated counterparts, often bringing with them extended action sequences and extended backstories for their main characters.

The closest comparison we can make at this stage is to other Disney Renaissance films. The beauty and the Beast And Aladdin, the execution time of which, respectively, 84 and 90 minutes, increased to 2 hours 9 minutes and 2 hours and 8 minutes, respectively. The only other live-action Disney remake currently above the 2-hour mark is Cruellaalthough this is not an indication of what fans can expect as this movie was a brand new backstory centered around Cruella De Vil (Emma Stone), rather than a remake of an existing story, as The beauty and the Beast And Aladdin are. With that in mind, it’s best to look at these two films in order to understand what could have been changed or added to Ariel’s story.

Some of the extra runtime can be attributed to the new songs that will appear in the film. Bye Mermaid will still include the classics Howard Ashman-Alan Menken tunes such as “Underwater”, “Kiss the Girl” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls”, prolific songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also wrote the score for the Disney animated film moana, was brought on board write additional songs along with original composer Mencken.

In addition to Bailey and Hauer-King, the film will star Melissa McCarthy like Ursula, Javier Bardem like King Triton, David Diggs like Sebastian Aquafina like scuttle, Jacob Tremblay like Flounder and also will Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, And BridgertonX Simone Ashley.

Mermaid will be released in theaters on May 26. Watch the movie trailer below:
